꒰part two ✩꒱ (coming soon)
creeping into chris' condo as quiet as possible with a wrapped gift in hand, a large smile took up most of your face at the thought of him opening it. though, the more you explored the area, the more discouraged you got before eventually giving up with a loud sigh at the realization that he wasn't home. but then, where was he? he always told you when he was going to be out, but today? he didn't even so much as leave you a text.
if not for chris updating you on his whereabouts becoming routine, you truthfully would've thought nothing of his sudden absence, but with a confused look on your face, you found yourself setting his christmas present on the coffee table in front of you to plop down onto his couch. you slipped your phone out of your back pocket, instantly typing away at it.
Tumblr media
it was simple and straight to the point, leaving no room for confusion; you'd never been the type to beat around the bush. you weren't upset, really—more like confused, is all. and you waited. sitting idly on his couch as you waited for that little 'delivered' alert to turn into 'read'.
it didn't.
not for a while, at least. you ended up leaving his house only about half an hour after you sent the message, seeing no reason in just sitting there overthinking it. but you still did. going on about your day, trying to distract yourself from that nagging voice in the back of your brain that whispered 'where's chris at? what's he doing?' and 'you're not special. he got bored of you, silly,' at any moment you weren't occupying your mind with something else.
you knew you were probably overreacting; being dramatic in a way chris wouldn't like if he could hear your thoughts. i mean, it's not even like you'd be that upset if he had gotten tired of you. he was only some good dick and a person to keep you company... every single day for the past month. shit, you needed to know. picking up your phone in a swift motion as you now sat on your own couch, having tried to watch a show as means to keep your mind off chris, you checked your notifications in hopes that you'd missed his text.
but something new caught your eye.
a notification from chris' twitter, far different than anything you'd imagined throughout the day. of course you clicked it, a small breath of relief coming from you as you'd immediately told yourself he must've been busy with his executives. oh, he was busy alright.
your eyebrows raised at the sight before you: a short clip of chris plowing into some blonde with big tits, her moaning and whining in such a forced way. he was grabbing and squeezing at them. i mean, shit, he wasn’t even a boobs guy. it was so unlike him, completely disregarding his original intent for his content—keep it authentic. the caption only contained the hub link, telling his fans to watch the full video there.
dread sounds about right. a look of dread spread across your face, as if you'd just witnessed your worst fear. except it wasn't your worst fear. at least you didn't think it was, until now.
without thinking, you found yourself in chris' messages again, seeing the 'delivered' alert still there like a taunt. it was a slap in the face, really. not even the fact that he'd went and filmed with someone else, but the way he'd so clearly purposely failed to give you any type of warning.
Tumblr media
once you'd sent the message, seeing the little text below your blue message change to 'read' instantly, it all suddenly felt pointless — all the worrying throughout the day, the dread you felt when you watched the short clip chris posted, the hurt when you saw he ignored your message, and now, even the message you literally just sent to him.

As if your fiancé leaving you for another woman wasn’t enough to make this the shittiest week of your life, now you’ve managed to lock yourself out of your house during an incoming blizzard. At least your next-door neighbor is home, and he’s kind enough to offer you shelter from the storm. You barely know Jihoon, only having spoken to him a few times - but soon, you discover you have more in common than you initially thought.
Tumblr media
Five days ago, you made the innocent mistake of picking up your fiancé’s phone when you thought it was yours. You noticed immediately when you saw the lock screen - it was a photo of you and him from last December, posed in front of a Christmas tree, taken minutes after he proposed. In it, you’re smiling ear to ear, enthusiastically showing off the beautiful engagement ring he bought you. The photo has been his wallpaper ever since. “You look so happy,” he told you a couple months ago. “I can’t bring myself to change it.”
You go to set the phone back down, but a notification catches your eye. You take a closer look, discovering a string of WhatsApp messages, all from somebody named Kelsey.
Huh, that’s weird, you think to yourself. I didn’t know he even used WhatsApp.
Normally, you’d think nothing of it - but something feels off. You hesitate for a moment. You know each other’s passcodes for the sake of convenience; you’ve never felt the need to go through his phone, and you feel bad about even thinking about doing it. But, your gut is telling you to investigate.
You input the password and open the message thread. You’re not quite sure what you’re even looking for, but two seconds of scrolling tells you all you need to know. Dumbfounded, you read the particular message three more times before it sinks in:
Can’t wait for our vacation next week baby, I really need to get away from all of this right now.
Your stomach lurches as if you’ve just been punched in the gut. He told you he was going on a business trip next week. He told you that months ago.
Get away from ‘all of this’? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Does he mean… me???
Blood rushes through your ears as you read through the never-ending series of sexts, nudes, notes more romantic than anything he’s ever said to you before, an entire paper trail of all the times and locations of the evident affair - until you feel like you’re going to be sick.
No, it’s not real. It can’t be. There’s no way…
Paralyzed, you stand there in disbelief, but as several more minutes of scrolling pass, it becomes clear that this is actually happening. Tears start to well in your eyes, but you quickly bottle it up, converting the energy into anger instead. You take the phone and march into his office to confront him - ready to shut him down when he tries to deny it.
But, he doesn’t even try to deny it. He doesn’t even care.
“Well, it’s about time you found out anyway,” he tells you nonchalantly.
“Our wedding is in three months!! How fucking long were you going to wait to tell me??”
“I was gonna tell you soon, I just needed it to be the right time.”
“The right time??!! When is there a right time to dump your fiancé???”
“Listen, y/n-”
“Don’t tell me to fucking listen!!” you raise your voice at him. “In fact, don’t say anything else. Get the fuck out of my house.”
“You can’t tell me to get out, this is my house too,” he replies, with the sheer audacity to have a tone of annoyance in his voice.
“It’s MY name on the fucking papers. Get. Out.”
And so, he left. Didn’t even give you his set of keys back. Didn’t even say goodbye.
Now, you sit here parked in your driveway, the howling of harsh winter winds whistling over the melancholy tune playing loudly from the car radio. The volume is cranked all the way up, but despite your best efforts to drown out the outside world, the sharp whooshing sounds persist. Looks like the incoming storm is going to be as bad as predicted - if not worse. The blustering begins to jostle the whole vehicle. You stare aimlessly out the front windshield, watching chunks of snow flying erratically through the air as the winds pick up further. With a sigh, you turn the ignition off, the engine and radio going silent. If you're going to sit around moping, might as well do it inside where it's warm. You reach for the garage door remote clipped on the visor above you, but your hand only hits the soft padding. Right, you think to yourself, still gotta get that one replaced too.
You drag yourself out of your car, hastily throwing your coat on and stumbling through the wind toward your front door. Flipping through your keys, something feels off. You look down, assuming your frozen fingers are just too stiff to pick out the correct one. You stare at the collection for several seconds, but your house key is not there.
“What the fuck?” you mutter to yourself in confusion. Then, a horrible realization sets in: you never put your new key on the keyring after getting your locks changed.
You brace yourself against the wind, trudging through the pile of snow accumulating in your front yard. As you reach the window, you lean over the bushes, peering through the partially-shut blinds into your kitchen to see a set of gold keys, sitting upon the center of the countertop.
“You gotta be fucking kidding me.”
Your stupid ex-fiancé isn’t even around anymore and he’s still finding new ways to make your life miserable. If he had just returned your damn keys, you wouldn’t be in this situation right now.
Tears start welling in your eyes - and this time, you surrender. The droplets begin to freeze on your face almost instantly, but you let yourself cry. After several minutes, you’re feeling slightly better - but you’re getting quite cold. You decide to head back to your car, at least turn the heat on while you try and figure out what to do, no need to stand here and get frostbite-
“Um, excuse me…”
You jump at the sound of the voice coming from behind you, whipping your head around to see a very bundled up man. You can’t see much of his face, but he looks to be in his late-twenties, with dark hair peeking out from under a thick beanie. It takes you a moment, but you realize it’s your next-door neighbor, Jihoon, whom you've met approximately once.
“I just wanted to check if you were okay,” he says loudly, doing his best to speak over the noisy wind. “You’ve been standing out here for a while.”
“Oh,” you reply, also speaking up. You wipe the tears off your cheeks with the back of your gloves. “Um, I’m kind of locked out of my house.”
“Is the lock frozen?”
“No- well actually, I don’t know, it might be, but I don’t have my key,” you explain, gesturing through the window. “It’s in there.”
“How did you manage to do that?” he inquires, not being condescending, but genuinely asking.
“The front door locks behind you when you leave.”
“Ohhh. Well that’s no good.” He pauses for a moment, looking at you curiously, before continuing.
“Um, well I know you don't know me very well, but if you need a place to wait while you call somebody you are welcome to come in,” he tilts his head toward his house. “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything, but it’s really dangerous to be out in this storm.”
Normally, you’d be standoffish to a man you barely know inviting you into his house - but, something about him tells you you can trust him. He looks and sounds sincere, and you really don’t have anywhere else to go. Plus, you’re fucking freezing. You nod at him.
“I would really appreciate that,” you shout over the wind. He nods back, gesturing for you to follow along. He walks with you to his front door, the both of you taking large steps to trek through the several inches of snow that has already accumulated. He turns the knob and ushers you inside, following quickly and shutting the door behind him.
The sounds of the howling wind abruptly stop, the door creating a barricade between you and the heavy winter storm. Your ears ring slightly, but as you adjust to the quietness of indoors you pick up on a familiar tune playing from the other room.
“Is that En Bateau I hear?” you ask as you unlace your boots.
He’s in the middle of unwrapping his scarf from around his head, but he perks up at your question. “Yeah! You know Petite Suite?”
“It’s one of my favorites,” you reply warmly as you take off your coat. You try to avoid letting the jacket’s heavy dusting of snow fall to the floor, without success.
“Dammit, I got your floor all wet,” you inform him with a sigh. You realize you’re shivering - the house is warm, comfortably so, but standing out in the cold for however long you were out there certainly chilled you to your bones. He takes your coat from your hands, shaking off the rest of the snow before putting it on a hanger for you.
“Don’t even worry about it,” he tells you, grabbing a neatly folded towel from the closet and mopping up the mess. “There’s some blankets on the couch, you should warm yourself up.”
The prospect of a nice cozy blanket sends you speedwalking into the living room. You spot the stack of blankets, also neatly folded, and grab the thickest one you see - it’s plush and velvety, dark red in color, and gigantic. You wrap the soft fleece around your whole body, plopping cross-legged onto the couch, practically turning yourself into a cocoon. Immediately you start to warm up, your poor frozen extremities finally relieved of the painful cold. As you defrost, your brain begins to work again, processing your surroundings. Though you’ve never been inside, your neighbor’s abode feels very homely - the decor is largely cream-colored, accented with warm earth tones, doused in low lighting sourced from a few lamps placed strategically around the room. Though a plain, warm white, the walls are flourished tastefully with various unique artworks - nothing you recognize, but all very pleasing to the eye. Not that your ex was a slob, but you’ve never known a man to be so neat and tasteful. Refreshing, you think to yourself.
You hear soft footsteps from behind you as Jihoon enters the room. You turn to see him bearing a glass of water, a piping hot mug, and a small metal tin.
“I don’t know if you like tea,” he starts as he sets the beverages on the coffee table’s coasters. “But I thought you might want something warm to drink.”
“Tea sounds great, thank you so much,” you reply as you wiggle your arms out of the tangle of blanket surrounding you. Reaching for the tin, you pull out a bag of Earl Grey and place it in the mug to steep.
“It’s y/n, right?” he asks as he sits in a nearby armchair.
“That’s me,” you reply. “And you’re Jihoon, yes?”
He nods to confirm. “I know we met once a while ago,” he adds, “but I wasn’t sure if you remembered.”
"Of course I remember, I accidentally stole your packages,” you say with a laugh. “I felt bad about that for months.”
“No harm done, it was an honest mistake,” he replies with a calm smile.
The tea is nowhere near ready, but you take a sip anyway. The hot liquid sends a wave of warmth through your whole body, making you instantly feel much better. Now that you’re not freezing and in tears, you can finally think straight, and you remember why you’re here in the first place.
“I should call the locksmith, god knows how long it’s gonna take them to get here in this storm,” you state as you look around for your phone, but it’s nowhere to be seen.
“Oh, I think my phone is still in my bag.”
You start to get up, but Jihoon is faster.
“Here, I’ll grab it for you.”
He disappears from the room in an instant, returning a few moments later with your bag in hand. Thanking him politely, you rummage around for your phone until you find it. You open Google and type locksmith into the search, calling the first one you see with good reviews.
“I’m sorry ma’am, due to the storm we aren’t able to send anyone out until tomorrow.”
You try another one, but it’s the same story. A third one, no luck either. Nobody is able to come out until tomorrow morning. Dejected, you go ahead and schedule an appointment for 7am the next day. You do your best to remain calm, but you’re too exhausted to hold in your tears.
“I don’t know what to do,” you say to Jihoon, burying your face with your hands.
“Hey,” he replies softly. “It’s gonna be okay. You can stay here as long as you need.”
“I don’t want to be a bother,” you sigh.
“You’re not,” he assures you. “I promise. You’re welcome to take the guest room.”
“Are you sure?” you say with a sniffle, wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Of course,” he nods.
“Thank you so much,” you tell him sincerely. “You’re a lifesaver.”
“No problem at all,” he says with a soft smile. “Also, are you hungry? I have some leftover stew I was going to heat up, if you’d like some.”
You didn’t even realize that you were hungry, but the mention of food makes your stomach rumble.
“That sounds amazing,” you reply.
Jihoon spends a few minutes in the kitchen, returning with two steaming bowls of a hearty-looking beef stew.
“This is delicious,” you remark as you scoop another chunk of potato into your mouth. “I’m gonna need your recipe.”
“Oh, thank you,” Jihoon replies humbly. “I’m glad you like it.”
Several moments of silence pass between you two as you enjoy the meal, the music of Debussy’s piano filling the room in lieu of conversation. But instead of it being awkward, you feel peaceful, replenished from the food and the warmth of Jihoon’s home.
“Is there anything you want to watch?” he eventually turns to ask you. “I like having something on while I eat, but if not it’s okay.”
“Sounds good to me,” you reply. “What are you watching right now?”
“Oh, um, I like… anime,” he says sheepishly, turning slightly pink with embarrassment. “But we definitely don’t have to watch that. What do you like?”
“Have you seen The Great British Bake Off?” you respond. “It’s on Netflix.”
“Never heard of it,” he admits, but he already has the tv remote in hand, opening the app.
“I haven’t seen the new season yet, if you want to start there.”
“Will I understand it if I haven’t seen the other seasons?” he inquires, causing you to giggle.
“It’s a reality show, each season is different,” you fill him in, proceeding to explain the premise. He listens earnestly, but his facial expression tells you he is skeptical.
“It’s really good, I promise!” you assure him.
“I don’t really get it,” he admits with a confused look on his face. “But if you say it’s good, I’ll take your word for it.”
He puts on the first episode, letting you explain the different challenges to him. About halfway through the episode, he turns to you.
“So… what exactly do they win?”
“A cake stand,” you answer. The look of bewilderment on his face makes you laugh again.
“So they don’t even get any money from it??”
“Nope,” you reply, cozying up under the blanket again. “That’s why it’s so wholesome.”
“Ah, okay,” he says, still unsure about the whole thing. But by the end of the first episode, he’s hooked.
“How do they do that??” he remarks at each contestant’s fanciful cake in the final challenge, his eyes glued to the tv. As soon as the credits start to roll, he clicks the Next Episode button.
“See? I told you it was good,” you say with a sleepy smile. The combination of the satisfying dinner, the warmth of the blanket, and the relaxing nature of the show is quickly making your eyelids turn heavy. You lean your head against the back of the couch, determined not to doze off - but within a few minutes, you are fast asleep.
Tumblr media
The soft light of early dawn glows through your closed eyelids as you begin to awaken. You’re so warm and comfortable that you don’t even bother opening your eyes - instead you just lay there, relaxing under the blankets. As your brain slowly wakes, last night’s events start to register in your mind - you grimace as you recall the bitter cold of being stuck outside your own house, having a breakdown, feeling utterly helpless until-
Your eyes pop open. Sleepily adjusting to the morning light filtering in through the windows, you see that you’re still in Jihoon’s house, on the couch. You turn your face to see a pillow underneath your head that wasn’t there previously, and an extra knit blanket draped over the red fleece one that was already wrapped around you. Jihoon is nowhere in sight, presumably still asleep. You wonder what time it is - when suddenly you remember the locksmith appointment you made for 7am. Panicked, you bolt upright, searching for your phone amidst the blankets, until you spot it laying upon the coffee table, plugged into a charger that isn’t yours. You snatch it up, your heart sinking when you see the time: 7:34am.
“SHIT,” you grumble to yourself. You hurriedly unravel yourself from the tangle of blankets - it’s still warm in his house, but a chill hits you in the absence of the cozy covers. Sitting fully upright, you feel your feet bump something as they touch the carpet. Looking down, you spot a pair of slippers - light beige in color, women’s, brand new with the tags still on. For a moment you feel a bit weird about putting them on (Why does he have these, anyway?), but you’re cold, and at this point you don’t care. You slip them on, the comfort of the fluffy interior immediately making you  glad you did. They feel high quality - luxurious even, and now you feel nice and toasty. Rising from the couch, you grab the top blanket and wrap it around you. The inviting scent of coffee suddenly hits you - you follow it into the kitchen, where Jihoon stands before a brewing coffee pot. Noticing you have entered the room, he turns to greet you.
“Good morning,” he says warmly. He wears a pair of plaid pajama pants, seemingly with a matching top underneath a dark fleece quarter-zip. You note that he also has slippers on, not too dissimilar from the ones currently on your feet. As the coffee finishes brewing, he grabs two mugs, gesturing to you with one.
“Would you like some coffee?”
“I’d love some,” you answer. He takes the pot and pours the piping hot beverage into your mug.
“Cream and sugar?”
“Yes, please.”
He fixes your drink and hands you the steaming mug. You take a small, careful sip, your insides instantly warmed by the smooth brew.
“Delicious, thank you,” you tell him, taking another generous sip.
“Of course,” he nods.
“Guess I missed the locksmith,” you say with a sigh. “I should’ve thought to set an alarm before I passed out.”
He turns, reaching for something on the counter. Turning back, he extends his hand to you, your keys laying in his palm.
“Already taken care of,” he says with a smile.
“How did you…” Your words trail off as you take the keys, your fingertips lightly grazing his warm skin.
“I met the locksmith and explained the situation,” he explains. “He picked the lock in like, one minute.” He gives you an apologetic look as he continues. “I’m sorry I went into your house without asking you first, I felt bad, but I didn’t want to have to wake you and drag you out into the cold.”
“Don’t apologize,” you reply, shaking your head quickly. “I really really appreciate it.”
“I’m glad I could help,” he tells you with a soft smile.
“Thank you for the pillow too,” you add. “And the slippers, glad you had these laying around,” you say with a grin. His smile fades slightly, glancing away for a moment.
“They were supposed to be a gift,” he says as he looks at you again. “But I didn’t need them anymore. You can keep them.” He smiles, but despite trying to hide it, his tone is tinged with sadness.
“Oh,” you say softly. “You sure?”
He hesitates slightly, unsure whether to tell you.
“They were for my girlfriend, but she left me a couple weeks ago,” he admits. He looks down at his coffee, stirring it aimlessly with the spoon. A pang of sympathy hits you.
“I’m sorry,” you say gently. “I unfortunately can relate. My fiancé left me five days ago, for another woman.”
He perks his head up slightly in surprise. “Oh wow, what an awful week this must be. I’m sorry, too.”
“Yeah, quite honestly, it fucking sucks,” you say, staring off into space a bit.
“I was about to propose,” he adds, unsure exactly why he’s telling you this. But you both are feeling a newfound, unspoken kinship in your aligned misfortunes. “But one day she just told me she didn’t love me anymore.”
“Jesus, that’s terrible, I’m so sorry,” you empathize. “I found out my fiancé was cheating on me and confronted him. He didn’t even give a shit so I kicked him out, haven’t seen or heard from him since.”
“Wow,” Jihoon says with wide eyes. He lets out a sigh. “I had already bought a ring, too. She didn’t know, but I had the whole proposal planned out.” He shrugs, shaking his head. “I guess it’s for the better that she left before I even bothered.”
“Yeah, doesn’t make it any less painful though.”
“Definitely not. And I wasn’t even able to return the ring.” He laughs, letting out an incredulous huff.
“Oh my god,” you react in bewilderment.
“It’s alright,” he says calmly. “Maybe I’ll be able to use it someday.”
His eyes linger on you slightly too long as the words roll off his tongue. The moment is brief, fleeting - but it’s enough for you to notice.
“Would you like any more coffee?” he asks before you can fully process anything, nudging the pot in your direction.
“I’m alright, thank you,” you reply, finishing the last bit in your mug.
“Here, I’ll take it.”
“I better get going, now that I can actually get into my house,” you announce with a smile. “I’ll get out of your hair.”
“You weren’t a bother at all,” he assures you. “But I’m sure you’re dying to go home.”
Jihoon walks to his entryway. He gathers your things for you, taking your coat from the closet and helping you into it.
“I truly can’t thank you enough,” you tell him sincerely. “You really saved my ass.”
He smiles at you. “You’re very welcome. It was nice to finally properly meet you, y/n.”
He hands you something as he opens the door for you. You take it - it’s a blue sticky note, with his name and phone number written neatly on it.
“You can always call me if you need anything at all.”
“Thank you,” you smile warmly, folding the note and tucking it safely into your pocket. “I will.”

Thanks for this addition!!!!! 100% agree with you with regards to how important tension is to horror; it's practically 90% of the story sometimes haha. I also thought that eliminating the threat of a 'bad ending' and giving the reader that confidence that all would be resolved and the protagonists/characters will be alright in the end, might make horror more of a cozy experience.
I was actually talking to someone today and brought up how maybe liminal space horror could also be cozy horror to an extent? Not the kind with a full-on monster stalking you I guess, but just the idea of being stuck in a liminal space setting and trying to escape. Some games have done this in such a way that you're exploring these spaces, and they're scary and unsettling, but at least you know that nothing's going to jump out at you; no monster truly lurks beneath the water, or in the dark shadows. It's all just unsettling but harmless. And at some point you can (hopefully) find your way out and not walk the 'backrooms' forever. High stakes, no real danger.
(So, like you said, the feeling of safety is I think a critical element - but that brings me back to the idea of fiction being fiction, and doesn't that by extension create a feeling of safety on its own for the reader, because none of it is real? Or maybe I'm going too far lol XD)
In that case, off the top of my head, these are the kinds of stories that would become cozy horror by that definition (no bad ending):
The Conjuring (2013)
Get Out (2017)
Dracula by Bram Stoker
(As an aside, the issue with readers knowing that nothing bad will happen in the end kind of negates the way in which horror works through the use of the unknown and reader uncertainty, at least in part.)
I'm not sure if I'd group the horror experience of all three as similar, and I'm not sure that they have similar amounts of tension. But the stakes are all essentially the same: soul/self (damnation/loss of self). Relatively high stakes lol, but they have good endings... I wonder?
In my head, the way that this idea of cozy [genre] works is we actually remove the stakes in the story, because they're there, but we're signalling to the reader that the main character(s) aren't really going to have to deal with those stakes much, and will overcome them regardless of what's thrown at them. So, you have stakes, but you don't really have stakes, if that makes sense. So, you can have high stakes, too, like in horror, because you don't really have stakes; the characters will prevail.
I also wonder, how much of a 'good' ending would qualify something as a cozy horror? And what about stories with bittersweet endings, like The Others (2001), where the revelation at the end is like "Oh, okay, so they're actually safe, nothing's wrong, but that's because they're the ones who are doing the haunting"? It's a relatively good ending, but also not quite the good ending we're expecting.
Apart from that, if we consider other cozy genres, like cozy murder mysteries, it usually takes place in small towns, with average-joe 'detectives', both of which carry over to horror really well. Lots of horror is in a small, limited space like a small town, and lots of horror features protagonists who are just normal people thrown into terrible situations and having to claw their way out of them. The upbeat-uplifting tone of cozy mysteries, however... I think it would be interesting for sure to try and apply that in horror. It might come off sounding ironic, perhaps even play into comedy horror a little, too.
I haven't read any SCP stories or House of Leaves, but I've been meaning to for some time now. Maybe after I finish my current read!
Cozy Fantasy and Why It Doesn't Work
I think I am among many who feel like they should love cozy fantasy and have found it an incredibly lacking genre.
This newly branded "cozy fantasy" genre that has taken readers by storm since 2020 and while it is new that books are now marketed as cozy, the genre itself isn't new. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is a great example of the genre before it was labeled and also how to make it work.
Cozy fantasy is defined by many as fantasy with low stakes. Fantasy aesthetic but less sword fights. On paper, it sounds great. But the execution has been less than stellar for readers like me. The lack of physical stakes has also impacted the emotional stakes of these books, creating forgettable characters with boring problems. As a romance reader, I find this frustrating. Romance is known for being a predictable and formulaic genre, the now defunct Romance Writers of America defined romances as needing happy endings, a term romances have continued to follow. Yet these romance texts manage to have low physical stakes (how to date your neighbor, how to confront your toxic friends, etc) while still maintaining high personal stakes that keep readers invested and begging for more. So I was initially confused why cozy fantasy authors struggle to write texts that connect to readers like me.
I think I have found the answer which is the genre is just here for vibes. It is all about aesthetic, not even worldbuilding that fantasy is known for as most cozy fantasy I read have so many problems as soon as you ask one question. It is hard to acknowledge that a genre that is pitched to work for readers like me doesn't work for many of us. Especially because occasionally there is one that works beautifully to my taste.
I often say my favorite cozy fantasies that are more contemporary are short and visual, which I plays into the idea of the genre being an aesthetic. The Bakery Dragon by Devin Elle Kurtz is a good example because it is a simple story that is given the perfect amount of pages and gorgeous visuals without dragging on when the message is very clear and easy to understand. Books like The Phoenix Keeper and Legends and Lattes have absolutely nothing for me, their very clear message hitting the reader over and over so the readers don't miss it and focusing on the aesthetic of worldbuilding rather than the reality of the fantastic elements within the world.
I guess my point is. . . I realize this genre isn't for me since I have realized it is more of an aesthetic than anything. .. .but I want it to be. Should I let it go and put my efforts elsewhere? Or should I keep exploring this new trend and find the hidden gems?

nichelink: a newly coined niche relationship/relationship dynamic that differs from social norms, but is consensual and aware of potential risks.
examples:
relationship where one person is treated as if they are an object owned by the other/s in the relationship
relationship where one person is treated as if they are a deity, and the other/s in the relationship are their followers
relationship where one person is treated as if they are a pet owned by the other/s in the relationship
relationship where one person is treated as if they are a child adopted by the other/s in the relationship
relationship where one person is transforming the other/s in the relationship into something
labels under this umbrella have a Ratings System.
All-Ages: a label that is suitable for all ages.
16+: a label that would be best if it was only used by people 16 years or older (bodily). this doesn’t mean that it’s NSFW or something, but should be used when the term has something pretty intense or serious about it which probably shouldn’t be practiced with younger people. all terms under this umbrella that involve identity modification or training are inherently 16+.
18+: a label that is inherently not suitable for people under 18 years (bodily).

my own personal experience of becoming someone’s “dad” - i made a friend in high school who i came out as transgender too, and then as a joke based on how people in the undertale fandom called toriel “mom,” we began referring to me as my friend’s “dad.” this joke stuck and then started genuinely being a serious part of our friendship. reflecting on this made me realize that there’s actually lots of relationships in life that’re similar, where you refer to each other as something unusual and it feels like it changes the entire status of your friendship. i liked the idea of making a word someone can use for this kind of friendship/relationship if they wanted.
i did a lot of writing about what this term means and can be used for and it ended up being long so you can read it on this page. here are some of the faq questions (but not all, so please read that page):
is this anti r*dqueer?
i don’t find it makes sense to say that something that isn’t a stance term/blankqueer term is anti this or pro that. but this term was inspired by r*dqueer “consensual abuse” relationships, and i did start working on this because i saw that there were a lot of people who craved a specific relationship dynamic or way of being treated who felt like they couldn’t get that outside of the r*dqueer community, so i wanted to make a risk-aware and safer alternative that is not attached to a harmful community known for abuse, transphobia, racism, etc.
if you crave being treated a certain way, yes even in a “harmed” way, this term is welcome to you.
can i coin my own?
not yet. i’m still working out the kinks (🥁✨) on definitions and guidelines. i also have a big list of terms i’d like to coin for it. you can send me a request at least.

A Lecture on Desire - Part II
Pairing: Kathryn Hahn x Reader
Summary: A lecture on The Price of Salt is supposed to be all about Therese and Carol, but when Professor Hahn locks eyes with you, lines blur. Slow-Burn. Non-magical AU
Word count: 1.1k
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carol looked at her. "How do you become a poet?"
"By feeling things - too much, I suppose," Therese answered conscientiously.
- Patricia Highsmith, The Price of Salt
Part II
The hiss of steaming milk, the sharp whir of grinders blending into a steady hum of conversation. People weave through the space with trays and bags, the occasional burst of laughter cutting through the noise.
It’s your first day behind the counter, and every part of your new barista job feels like an uphill battle.
„Y/N, the line’s building! Keep it moving!” Your colleague snaps, but their words barely register. You slide a latte across the counter to a waiting customer, quickly wiping down a sticky spot before taking the next order. Your apron feels tight against your waist, and the sleeves of your shirt are damp from a botched attempt at steaming milk earlier. The heat from the machines only adds to your flustered state, making your hair stick to your temple as you try to keep up. “Next!” you call, forcing a smile.
After a chaotic morning, the café finally quiets with the lull after morning classes. You tuck a los
A scent reaches you. A faint trace of sweetness, like jasmine and earthy notes of musk and oakmoss …
You‘re about to turn right when you hear a smooth voice „Double espresso, to go dear.“
… something smoky, like tobacco or leather?
You blink, startled, as your brain catches up.
Professor Hahn stands at the counter. Her hair is open, a few strands falling loosely around her face. She wears a dark coat over a purple turtleneck, the same coat you noticed from the other day when you caught sight of her outside the library. She looks just as effortless, just as composed.
“Of course! Just a moment.” Your hands fumble slightly as you prepare the order, the movements automatic but your nerves far from steady. You can feel her watching you, every move sharp and calculating, as if she’s already figured out more about you than you’d like her to know.
„Here you go,“ your voice is steadier than you feel, but there’s a tremor beneath the words that you can’t quite mask. Kathryn takes the cup from you, her fingers brushing yours lightly, sending an unexpected jolt through you. She lets the moment linger before offering a small, knowing smile. “Rough day, honey?” There’s something playful hiding beneath her voice. She glances at the cappuccino stains on your apron before meeting your gaze again.
“I’m still getting the hang of it.” You swallow, trying to keep your composure.
“Mm. I can tell,” she says, her voice teasing.
You nod, your heart racing as she continues. “I liked your take on the reading in class,” she says, removing her glasses slowly before taking a deliberate sip of her espresso.
You open your mouth to respond, but she cuts you off „It’s a good start,” she adds, her gaze lingering on you, making your pulse quicken. You feel a heat rise in your cheeks.
Her lips curl into a knowing smile, and for a moment, the air between you seems to thicken. There’s something almost daring in her tone as she adds, “Well, anyway, you’ll get the hang of it… if you want to, that is.”
The words hang in the air, heavy with more than one meaning. You’re not sure if she’s talking about your class answers, your new job, or something else entirely.
“Well,” she says, as she prepares to leave.
„I‘ll see you in class, Miss Y/LN“, without another word, she turns and heads for the door, the bell above it jingling softly as she steps out into the cool air. The faintest trace of her scent lingers in the space, almost tangible.
Your first shift comes to an and end while wiping the counter you notice them, next to the cash register. Kathryn Hahn’s reading glasses.
You walk into class the next day, a bit of nervous energy humming through your veins. It’s been impossible not to think about the way Kathryn looked at you yesterday.
But now, as you settle into your seat the air feels uncomfortably charged as Kathryn walks into the lecture hall, heading straight to the front, taking her place at the podium without so much as a glance.
Your palms feel sweaty, but you try to shake it off. She starts the lecture, as usual, moving into a discussion of The Price of Salt. When you raise your hand and contribute your thoughts.
“I don’t think you’re interpreting it the way it was meant,” she responds curtly. The dismissal is subtle, but it stings just the same. She doesn’t look at you directly, her eyes scanning over the class instead and continues the discussion with someone else, leaving your point hanging in the air.
The rest of the class is uncomfortable, and when it ends, you’re still reeling. You leave the room quickly, trying to shake off the cold feeling in your chest, but as you gather your things, you realise - the glasses. They’re still in your bag, you had meant to return them to her personally today.
You know you should return them, but the thought of facing her now unsettles you, so you decide bring them to her office. The department building is almost empty and you slip into a side corridor near the staircase. Standing outside her office, the glasses feel heavy in your hand.
After a moment of hesitation, you make a quick decision. Instead of knocking, you approach the department assistant, handing her the glasses.
“Excuse me,” you say, “I believe Professor Hahn left these in the lecture hall“, your voice steady but your stomach fluttering. „Could you make sure she gets them back?”.
You get back to your apartment later that evening, feeling the weight of the day settle into your bones. You let the silence of the space swallow you whole, the hum of the city outside muted behind your windows.
Your mind keeps drifting so you you decide to do some reading for class.
The ping of an email snaps you out of your thoughts, and you glance at the open e-mail tab: Kathryn Hahn.
Your eyes widen and your heart picks up a little, and you’re almost afraid to open it. Your hands hover over the mouse. You klick.
Subject: Glasses
Dear Miss Y/Ln,
I assume I must have forgotten my glasses at the café. I’m not usually so forgetful, but it seems that day was an exception. Thank you for returning them to me.
As a gesture of appreciation, I’d like to invite you to lunch this Saturday at 2 p.m. Consider it a thank you for your promptness.
Do let me know if that suits you.
Sincerely,
K. Hahn

Let's just answer the whole damn list.
1: How many fics have you worked on since January?
I've got the ever present dal segno al coda that I've always been working on this year. However, in May, I came up with the concepts that turned into The Insurgent King and this has kind of taken over EVERYTHING in my mind.
I also got a couple of Ys fics out, a pretty dark story for Van Arkride, and a couple of one shot stories for FFXV.
2: What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year?
👏 MAFIA 👏 ADJACENT 👏
Insurgent King has been SO MUCH FUN because it's really delving a lot into the dark underbelly of stuff. I also got to use my AP style from Endless History in a fic with The King's Interview in that series.
But in general, writing has been amazingly therapeutic for me. It was something I started after my mom's death in 2022 as a bit of personal therapy. I think having time to be in make believe worlds writing fantasy and adventure when it sometimes feels like my world is falling apart has helped me more than you can believe.
Additionally, an upcoming story that I've been planning for Insurgent King is straight up a heist story, ala Oceans 11 and so forth. I've never done something like this before and it has been the craziest thing I've had to plan. And it's the one story that doesn't have a shit ton of stuff already written for it, since the heist needs to be so carefully put together.
I'm SO excited for that story to finally get released. I can't wait for people to read it because it's been so much fun to plan.
3: What piece of media inspired you the most? (This can be the fandom you wrote the most for, the one that spawned the most ideas, the one you thought about the most, etc.)
Final Fantasy XV seems to be the game to keep on giving me a lot of inspiration for ideas. However, I've been finding inspiration for my stories in so many things all over the place.
Trails Through Daybreak has served as much of a supportive 'vibe check' for Insurgent King, as an example. Watching through Tower of God's S2 anime has reminded me of how COOL that comic is and since I've started writing, I've started finding a whole new appreciation for fiction and other stories all over the place. The biggest influence this year, though, has been from old TV shows ala Lost and Stargate, both of which have been an immense inspiration for the storytelling method behind Insurgent King. Look at it like a serialized TV series and the way I'm writing it will probably make a lot more sense.
4: How many fandoms did you write for this year?
For things published, three: Final Fantasy XV, Ys, and Trails.
For things that are still in my WIPs bin? Lost Universe, No Man's Sky, and Helldivers.
5: What ships captured your heart?
I adore Lunoct - but I fully understand that my bias comes from working on dal segno al coda, which is kind of my baby. I can't wait to start releasing it, because Noctis and Lunafreya are the quintessential power couple in it, and fate does not want them together because of the shit they can do when united in it.
6: What characters captured your heart?
I know this was from something I released last year, but it was at the very end of the year, and it still carried over through this year: Anemona from Ys IX. I would not have written anything for her if it wasn't for the Yuletide exchange.
I've also found myself loving the hell out of writing Gladio in my FFXV fics. He's started to become one of the easiest characters for me to write, even.
Also, writing in the point of view of Regis in The King's Gambit. I want to write something that's far more enjoyable for him than the ball of anxiety he was in that fic. Shit was going poorly and he had to change everything to make it go less poorly in that story. I just want something with him being happy.
7: Did you write for any new fandoms or ships this year?
I hadn't written/released anything for the Trails series, strangely enough, until I wrote Cannot Deny His Sleepless Eyes. I have another fic that I've been dabbling with that's Trails from Zero/Trails to Azure, but I'm not far enough to really call anything for it.
8: What fic meant the most to you to write?
The Cordelia Manifest.
This was the first fic of the Insurgent King series. Think of it like the pilot for a TV series. I wrote it based on vibes I got while listening to music from Bubblegum Crisis. While doing so, I realized that I love this setting a LOT and really needed to delve into it more and explain out how Insomnia fell and Noctis became a king of the criminal underworld in it.
9. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
Lost and Found.
This was my fic in the FFXV Remix event that happened earlier this year. I had so much fun reading a fic called The new guy by MiraNjell and chose it for my remix fic.
A lot of this was pulled from my own personal experiences from getting a new puppy this year.
10: What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?
The Insurgent King.
In this case, not the series, but the fic named for the series. This is my longest published fic on AO3, and I felt so proud of actually getting it done.
11: What fic was the most difficult to write?
ad astra is one of my FFXV wips. I've come and go with it several times, but since it delves very hard into concepts that are "beyond human understanding" and kind of delves a bit into cosmic horror… it's easily one of the most difficult projects ahead of me. I want to read more cosmic/eldritch horror before I try to write more of it, and I really want to become a much better writer to do this concept justice.
With what I released, it would be Cannot Deny His Sleepless Eyes. I've never written whump before and this was somewhat uncomfortable as it has a lot of heavily implied child abuse. It's only 400'ish words, but I didn't want to expand on it any further.
12: What fic was the easiest to write?
Infiltration! I just sat on the ending for ages, and then decided "boom" and knocked that shit out in a couple of hours. A lot of Noctis and Prompto's interactions remind me very much of the same kind of 'two friends who lose all brain cells when together' friendship that I have with my best friend.
In fact, the "be quiet" aspect of Infiltration was actually based on a real bet with my best friend from years and years ago.
13: What were your shortest and longest fics posted this year?
Shortest: Cannot Deny His Sleepless Eyes - 414 words
Longest: The Insurgent King (story, not series.) - 62,638
14: What were your go-to writing songs?
I made a whole ass playlist for Insurgent King.
15: What was the hardest fic to title?
Filed Away. I still am not 100% happy with the title.
16: What's your favorite title of the year?
There's an upcoming story in my Insurgent King series called A Field of Flowers. I love everything about this title. I can't wait for people to see just why it's an amazing title, too.
17: Share your favorite opening line
Ring ring. Ring ring. Ring ring. Click. "Fisherman's Lighthouse." "Good… [afternoon], this is an automated call from Concordo Shipping. Your freight parcel has been scanned in at… [Pier Lots Warehouse] and will be ready for pick up in… [forty-eight hours]. Failure to pick up your parcel… [one week] after its release will see that your parcel is forfe–" Click.
The above is the opening from Observator, one of the side stories in Insurgent King. I love it because I think you can hear the automated voice on the line.
18: Share your favorite ending line
Voices echoed through Regis' quickly fading consciousness. He saw the flash of blue, glimmering magic in front of him. He couldn't make out the words from the woman's voice — it sounded as if he was under water. He had no time. He held his left hand up to her. He needed the ring to be noticed immediately. "Take it." His strength faded fast. "Take it to…" But Regis Lucis Caelum never got out that last word before he died on the steps of the Citadel.
The above is the ending (before the super short epilogue) of The King's Gambit, the third story of the Insurgent King series. Regis' death is a catalyst to everything in the series, and I wanted the story that was in his POV to end abruptly as he died. There would be no more 'voice' for the POV any longer, afterall.
19: Share your favorite piece of dialogue
"It's not home." Noct said as he crossed the room and started to poke through the bag. It's dinner, but instead of commenting on the food, he mused out loud, "I'm surprised, though. Ignis is usually super critical when I'm too lax about hiding my identity." "You could make it easier and introduce me to them as your cousin Gladio Gar." "No." Noct stopped, then looked up. He sounded a lot sharper than he initially intended, but continued with it, "Don't. That's my thing." Gladio leaned back with a smug grin. The chair groaned in protest at the large man's weight from the action. "Yeah, I know." He paused for a second, just for the timing of it. "It shouldn't be." "I have a good cover here." Noct mumbled as he dropped into his own chair and opened the box to look through the food. It was a burger — he was surprised it wasn't Cup Noodles. "It's about as great as a baseball cap." "It works!" Noct grabbed a fry out of the box and threw it at Gladio. He laughed as it only bounced harmlessly off his head.
The above is from A Part to Play, one of my Twilight extra stories that's still in WIP format. I have to be extremely careful with this one because it has some very technical stuff to describe and I need to take my time. It should be out soon, though.
19: Share your funniest line
This time, the roles were switched. Luna took hold of Noctis' wrist and walked ahead to lead him, instead. "What's the worst he could do to us?" "To you." Noctis didn't fight being pulled along. "He wouldn't do anything to you." A beat. "He'd just kick my ass in our next training session." "If he's kicking your ass," It was so weird to hear Luna repeat his own words. She always knew what to say and the perfect way to say it, when Noctis felt he fell short in that skillset. Luna quickly glanced back to say, "Then you just need to…" She paused, as she seemed to search for the words, then continued, "get good and show him what for." Noctis thought, at first, that he must have not heard her right. The words and Luna's voice just didn't sound right together. After running that over in his head again, he finally laughed. "I'm sorry. Who are you and what did you do with Lunafreya?"
This is from Date Night, my little 'preview fic' for Noctis and Lunafreya in dal segno al coda.
This fic is a single night of events that just didn't fit in the full narrative of the main story and is Noctis and Lunafreya having an evening out together in Insomnia. (takes place during part 2)
I really have a lot of fun with Noct and Luna in segno. I know I said it before, but I'll say it again: I really can't wait to get comfortable enough to start posting it, because I want people to really have fun with what the two are capable of in that story.
As I said before, they are very much a power couple in dal segno al coda, except there are points here and there when Noctis and Lunafreya just have the chance to be the people they could never otherwise be.
20: What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
I would go as far as to say that the sudden idea behind Solus popping into my head was a big surprise. It doesn't change the overall story of the Insurgent King, but it does add more to it, I feel.
There's also a contender for biggest 'surprise' that came about from writing part 2 of segno. This wasn't this year - I think I wrote the scene last year, even - but I'm still trying to contend with it. I feel like I have to fight over 'how far is too far' with the idea.
It changed a LOT of segno and triggered a lot of rewrites, as well. However, it was very much a case of 'Lunafreya wants what she wants, and it's not necessarily what the author originally wanted.' LOL
21: What writing programs did you use? Did you write by hand?
I started using Google Drive, but I was introduced to Ellipsus this year and I love it so much. So I've started migrating my works to it.
While it's not the main parts of the story themselves, I have a plnner for dal segno al coda, that I use to keep track of dates in it and what happens around said dates.
I also have been carrying a tiny composition book in my purse to use when I get ideas while away from home.
22: If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
I would actually put that towards The King's Interview and when I looked at the finished product on AO3. Not so much the writing part of it, but the design work and workskin editing. Since I have a web development background, I really love playing with AO3 workskins and think they can be a very powerful tool in storytelling.
That header image was made from two different stock images, and intended to illustrate the interview, as you would see on a news site or newspaper.
I also did something like it for the Epilogue for The King's Gambit. I made a faux newspaper front page in InDesign, complete with making a believable printed halftone look of the front of the Citadel. There's so much more of that layout than what I showed.
I've also got a story that's doing something like this further down the line in segno - so I may have just lifted that idea from there. segno's 'front page' is a little more complete than this one, however. Complete with extra fake headlines and snippets of other articles and stuff.
23: Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic?
Not necessarily. I think the only real time to celebrate finishing one would be when I finished The Insurgent King - the story, not the series it's named after. This is probably due to the nature of the series, though, since I was immediately in my files and making notes of where to go with the next story and what had to be revealed in it (as well as what I can't reveal yet).
24: How did you recharge between fics?
I might just pull up a game and play a bit. Nothing too fancy.
25: Did you create fanworks other than fic?
Not really, no.
26: How many events did you take part in? (bangs, exchanges, ship weeks, zines, prompt memes, they all count!)
Just one, really. It was the @ffxvremix. I wrote Lost and Found for it.
27: If this were an awards show, who would you thank?
I'd thank, of course, @firefallvaruna for being my amazing beta reader. I'd also thank @snifftheraven. He's been the best sounding board for a lot of my ideas. He's also super honest and tells me when my ideas are too much, or if I have gone down a path that I probably wouldn't want to take.
28: What's left on your to-do list for 2024?
Sadly, my to-do list included getting part 1 of segno done. Then I got sideswiped by a whole new AU called The Insurgent King. Which is on point for that AU's version of Noctis.
I might celebrate the end of the year by working on segno a bit more and maybe pushing that 75-80% completion a little closer to 100%.
29: What would you like to write next year?
Getting segno's part 1 done and started to AO3 is definitely on my planned list for next year. I'm also continuing onward into Insurgent King.
I know the ending to both series. I should be able to make it.

2024 Book Retrospective
i did this last year for all the books i released in 2023, and i've been looking forward to doing it again for this year because it was Such a wonky ride. i released 3 new novellas, collected 3 old ones in a new illustrated release, put out a new freebie, and dipped my toes into artbooks for the first time. that's not even including the multiple extra things i wrote this year but will release next year. it felt to me like i barely got anything out in 2024, but looking back i really did plenty.
anyway let's get into it! these will probably contain spoilers for the books because i want to talk about them openly. if you haven't read them yet... they're on sale for 40% off until the new year!
Tumblr media
The Masson Circle Collection (1-3), released in January
so! we started out the year with this updated version of some of my earlier works. daffodils, carnations, and laurels were among my first forays into publishing novellas, and were the last of my romances before i transitioned more deliberately into erotica. the distinction is practically arbitrary since i do still write about people in love, but it's not the focus so much as the sexual titillation.
but anyway. because these were romances and not Porn (despite having explicit sex in them), and because they came out before i'd really hit my stride as an erotic author/illustrator in 2021/2022, they never got the attention i'd have liked for them! they were the last before i made the switch to properly illustrating my books; they had sketchbook sections at the back instead. i started the roger crenshaw series shortly afterward, which is when my work really took off. so it's like these stories just missed their window.
but i wanted people to read them! these stories and characters are dear to my heart and i felt like they deserved a fair shake, so i spent a month or so at the end of 2023 revising the text to be closer to my standards (though they were pretty good to start with!) and made 30 new illustrations for it. i kept myself Busy getting this ready. it would be a huge release to kick off the new year!
.... and then it didn't do very well anyway. lmao. maybe i priced it too high, maybe i didn't hype it enough, maybe it's because as much as i love all the characters, they're hard to draw and not as exciting as a monster of the day. who knows! but i'm glad i did it, if only for myself. as i've said, these stories were important to me and my growth as an author. if you like historical queer romance with a crime thriller edge, something like kj charles (because she was my biggest inspiration at the time) you should check these out! i promise they're really good despite being on the older side.
Tumblr media
The Long Road, released in May
boy that's a big gap between january and may. so what happened there is i actually wrote the night guest first in january-february, and then the long road in march-april. but IMPORTANTLY, i learned my editor @petitemortality was going to become available for work again in april. it'd been probably a year since i'd had his hands on my work and i was Gasping for it. i've compared it to receiving the sponge treatment--just being put through the wringer and coming out So much better for it after a year of bad habits and complacency building up. so basically i put all publishing on hold until he could Fix Me.
and then i ended up rewriting both of those books practically from scratch based on his advice and godddd they really Were so much better for it. it's AGONY in the moment, but the work is worth it. anyway let's talk about the actual work huh.
the genesis of these characters is So funny, because i don't think a single one of them was created for the purpose of this story, rather they all existed as various mobs/nobodies to draw. the goblins and bandits beside vanesse were just designs i used a few times when i wanted to draw characters getting gangbanged. vanesse and angre were created Just for a patreon suggestion of "trans femme bandit queen fucking a trans masc knight". and tourmaline only exists because i wanted to draw a princess getting gangbanged and eveline didn't feel "right" for it anymore. and i ended up with this perfect mishmash of characters that slotted together into a story so naturally that i remember waking up in the middle of the night and banging out the outline in the notes app before falling back asleep and starting to write it the next day.
and it was received pretty well! it had a ton of buildup from me drawing the characters constantly for the duration of the writing and doing a ton of public worldbuilding for dwarves. god i love the worldbuilding for the dwarves. i'm desperate to get deeper into it, i just need to find the story for it. and the goblins. everybody loves the goblins and so do i. and vanesse. ahhhhh.... i'm just so fond of everybody in this book lol. just a big confluence of Toys.
oh yeah and since last year i picked favorite scenes, i think my favorite is angre's internal monologue at the start of his chapter. we get a lot of the worldbuilding there (so of course i like it) but also the Point of the book comes together. i'd struggled a lot with that whole bit in the first draft, but the final draft really just *chefs kiss* it works, for me.
Tumblr media
The Night Guest, released in July
as i mentioned before i actually wrote this one much earlier into the year! and immediately had known it wasn't ready, and so backburnered it for months until my editor could essentially fix it. and he fixed the hell out of it. it was a directionless mess in the first draft because i hadn't figured out the characters' voices, what they actually wanted, why they behaved how they did, none of it. it was his idea to structure it more deliberately like an old folktale of a woman outwitting a best, and it snapped into place. of course it was a nearly total rewrite that added like 7000 words (and to this day i'm still not sure how) but it was completely worth it. i feel like i've said that multiple times in this post but it's always true. i cannot stress enough how much i was gasping for a good editing. it's like a cleanse.
this is another story that just sort of Happened out of nowhere. mrs. arakawa was a side character in the dragon double feature 2, and people liked her, and asked about her getting her own monster boyfriend, and so toru was born. partially to get practice drawing that bodytype, partially because i think onis are hot, and then the general shape of a story came to me and i started writing it. without a perfectly clear vision of what it would be. and that's how we got to where we were at the start of this. oops.
i have two favorite parts, the first being this illustration:
Tumblr media
when toru is describing the oni woman he was supposed to marry. his entire narrative arc and personal struggle was constructed for the purpose of this joke. i agonized for DAYS, maybe weeks, trying to make his motivation of "i didn't want to get married" work with mrs. arakawa's own feelings about marriage and him having to leave at the end and come back and all of that. it was killing me. but it worked out in the end and i'm so happy it did because i still think the joke that he didn't want to marry a shoujo nadeshiko archetype because he thinks she's ugly is fucking hilarious.
my actual favorite scene is him and mrs. arakawa telling each other stories about themselves. i had a lot of fun trying to ape the rhythms of kabuki performance and rakugo with it.
Tumblr media
Spring with the Unicorns, released in June
technically this ought to go before the night guest because it came out first but considering i wrote the first draft of the night guest in january *waves hands* it's all loosey goosey anyway
so this came about because i had the idea to do a book called Season's Breedings (so many of my books happen because i thought of a title and worked backwards from there) and it was literally just going to be the breeding habits of fantasy fuckworld creatures arranged by season. i wrote this one first because it seemed the easiest and then it was less than 4k words, and every other story i had in mind was going to be Much More than that and also didn't come together as easily. so on a very last minute whim i illustrated this and threw it out for free on the last day of pride.
it's me at my loftiest because i was going for a sort of third person omniscient fable type beat, because that's what unicorns deserve. i like it, and it's a good little treat to give out for free. especially because everybody loves the unicorns and loves asking me the same four lore questions and i can just say 'go read the free story' lmao.
it's too short to really have a favorite Scene but barberry is my favorite unicorn. just love everything about that guy. angry little bastard.
Tumblr media
Poker Night with the Arizona Dogs, released September
it's not prose but it counts! this is the first artbook i've ever released, though technically not the first i ever made. the unicorn stockades series came before it but will be released sometime next year. it's a bit more spring-seasony. but anyway.
these are a lot of fun to make! i am, at my heart, a comic artist (my day job is graphic novels, buy my graphic novel it comes out in february) so telling a single story in multiple illustrations is kind of my bread and butter. and free use/gangbang stuff is like. perfect for it. everybody has to get a turn! and on top of that it lets me play in a space in a way prose doesn't. prose feels so much more official, more canon (which is how i think of the difference between my drawings and my books--books are canon, drawings are not). but with something like this it's easier to say it was just for fun. because it was! it was a lot of fun.
my favorite illustrations were the jackie-ralph licking ones (because i think i did a good job with the mouths and the folds and all) and the one with johnny with his hand over roger's face and hiding his own. jackie-ralph is probably my favorite of the dogs to draw because he's easiest but johnny is certainly my favorite of the Boys.
Tumblr media
Objects of Affection, released in December
boy, this one huh! there is so much to say about this one. this one has like three separate catalysts that blasted together at the end of the summer and it just Happened all at once. there was a person requesting variations on "a mechanic taking advantage of an android they're repairing" for a few months on patreon that i kept meaning to do because it kept winning second place. there was another story i wrote that was too short to publish alone that i was like "okay what if i make a sci-fi anthology and one of the stories is robots..." and then i started rereading chobits for inspiration and it Pissed Me Off So Much how little it wants to engage with its own ideas.
and then the sci-fi anthology idea became only about the robots and i never published the original little short (which will come out next year as a freebie). and then my editor's computer Exploded for two months and he wasn't able to edit it ; ; the wait was Agony because this was one i really, Really did not want to release without proper feedback. something fucking Possessed me with this book and what it says about women and consent and masculinity and all the shit. like those are themes i've already touched in my other works, but in this one it was like turning the knob on a pressure cooker.
it's tough to think of what to say about it that i didn't say in the days after it was released. i've always been frustrated with robot stories that preoccupy themselves with the Theory of rights for artificial life and not the reality of rights for the people we already have. i'd watched astro boy 2003 and pluto shortly before starting (so i guess that's actually 4 things that came together) so Robot Rights!! stories were fresh in my mind and i'd found astro boy particularly frustrating with its insistence on pacifism from the oppressed robots as the government and populace kept abusing them. it is very hard to watch something that says "violence is never the answer! don't fight back, choose peace!" while your own country is aiding and abetting a genocide and obsessing over retribution for a single attack born of decades of settler violence as if they are in any way equivalent.
breathes out
so anyway that's why i chose to write about robots who undeniably do not have sapience, humanity, or rights. because we haven't come even close to solving the issue of rights for ourselves, particularly women (an admittedly easier topic to approach in an erotic work than the horrors of racially motivated war). and between chobits, which suggests a world obsessed with androids but doesn't deeply explore the social ramifications of a female-shaped servant class, and my research into real dolls, the closest thing we already have to fuckable brainless androids, there is a lot of material to draw inspiration from. how a person treats an unperson, particularly one shaped like a woman, will reflect upon how they treat a real person, a real woman.
to be less of a bummer and talk about the Stories, ratna's was the first i wrote, and went through the most revisions between drafts as i tried to figure out her whole deal. she was always going to be a stone butch dyke mechanic, so how would that sort of person feel in her line of work? would she be a stereotype of man-hating lesbian, and sympathetic to the android girls she has to send home with them? or would she be an unrepentant sleeze, just as bad as everyone she works for? i think i ended up somewhere in the middle. she doesn't like men, but doesn't think of herself as better for not being one. she thinks she's better because she isn't better, but at least acknowledges it. and figuring that out was important to figuring out the character. and also going in way harder on the beauty of the mechanism. that was mainly for You Guys, but it was crucial to her character working.
touma and shima's story came to me like a lightning bolt as i was leaving for a vacation. it was going to be, if you can believe it, Even More toxic yaoi. touma ws going to jerk shima off from behind as he fucked mari-ko, it was going to be way more explicit that he was mainly attracted to shima. but ultimately none of that served the actual purpose of the book, about treating people as objects and tools, so i dialed it back. but don't get it twisted touma is still insane and obsessed with shima and wants to touch his cock. but the story as it exists is a more realistic place for him to be at.
and samart and marinette's story was pretty much unchanged from first to final draft. the concept waffled a bit before i started writing, where my first idea had been that he makes her participate in taboo fantasies (calling him big brother, telling him no etc) and the narrative basically asking the question--is this wrong? is it better because she's not real, because he's doing it with her and not a real woman? does her 'no' matter if it's a 'no' she was ordered to say? is it worse because she can't meaningfully consent to the play either way? does any of it matter beyond the effect it has on him?
but as much as i'm interested in unpacking those concepts, i decided they would be too difficult for the audience and potentially open me up to scrutiny and abuse, because you can't even breathe the word "incest" without having your doors beaten down. the book as a whole is difficult, and i want it to be difficult, but i didn't want it to become about That. so instead i went with exploring the sort of loneliness and misanthropy of a person who lives the way he does, and i'm satisfied with it. i think it's the sharpest of the three stories.
wow i had nearly twice as much to say about that one than the rest. lol.
but that's it! that's everything i released! as i hinted throughout there were several other things i wrote this year that will see release next year. i have a free short, a $3 short, a novella awaiting editing, and at least two more artbooks to release. there'll be plenty for me to write about in next year's retrospective.
my writing goal for 2025 is to finish a novel. i did actually reach a finished draft with starbuster, the novel i've been pecking at for the past two years, but having done so and mapped out all the work it needs to be submission-ready, i've put it down semi-permanently. it simply needs too much and it's a bit too niche for traditional publishing, and it's in a genre (contemporary) i don't really want to write more of. so the best use of my time is on something else. it's a shame, but it's for the best! hopefully something will crack me upside the head with inspiration and it'll just Happen like all my best work seems to, lmao.
but if you've read all of this, or just read some of it, thank you!! thank you for supporting me for another year, or the first year if you just got here. if you haven't read everything i put out in 2024, it's on sale until jan 1st! go pick it up for cheap!!

Connection ~ Carlos Sainz
Part one
Tumblr media
Mafia!Carlos Sainz x Fem,Arranged!Reader
prologue part two
Synopsis: How will we get Carlos to agree to a marriage he doesn’t want?
Warnings: smut 18+ eventually, violence, toxic!carlos
Carlos was sitting at the breakfast table; notably not at the head spot, where his father use to sit. He was reading paperwork and eating an omelette prepared by his chefs, when his mother walked in.
“I found her!” she stated as she sat across from him. She was no longer wearing her mourning clothing. She was dressed in a mauve dress, amethysts decorated her ears and neck. Purple had always been her color. Her hair was up in a french twist, her signature style. She was back to herself again.
“Found who?” Carlos asked, not looking up from his work again. He had been very busy ever since he took over the business.
“Your wife”
The words stopped Carlos in his tracks. He slowly looked up at his mother. He hadn’t expected it so quickly, or for her to make the decision of who it would be. “What? No, if I must get married, I should be able to at least choose who I will get married to”
“Carlos” she sighed “sweetheart, your taste in women has never been exactly, shall I say, stellar” She grabbed his hand, the absence of her wedding ring becoming apparent “Besides, this girl is a family friend. Shes very sweet and very pretty. Her father is f/n l/n”
“y/n?” Carlos was shocked; he remembered the girl from gatherings early in life. It had been a long time, her father stopped bringing her to such events when she was four years old. Him and y/n used to be close friends. They had played together and even got fake married once. Ironic.
“Yes, I saw her a few years ago at her 16th birthday party. Shes a very nice girl. Perfect for the family. Plus consider it a gesture to her father. Him and Carlos always got along. You haven’t spoken to him since the funeral”
“Mother I respect you I do” she sat back “But, I will not marry this girl” I stood up “ I hardly even know her! If I must marry someone… I and I alone will choose who it will be”
“Its too late Carlos” She stands straightening her dress “I have already discussed this with her father. This marriage will be happening.”
“This is ridiculous! You aren’t in charge of me anymore!” Carlos leaps away from his chair wildly gesticulating at his mother “My father is dead… I am in charge you can’t undermine my authority like that!” he puts his hand to the bridge of his nose “Mother what exactly did you tell her father?”
——————————————————————————
“When I was discussing it with Reyes we had couple key things we talked about…” your father stated. You were now in a crowded room with your father at the head of the table; you were seated to his left. “First, you will get married before the end of the year, most likely in December”
“So soon?!” you say, shocked. Everything was happening so fast, it was already August.
“Yes, Darling, soon. Aswell as on the subject of children—“ his voice faded out you started to think about all of the choices being taken from you. This stranger you never met would choose where you live, how many children you have, and how you live your life. Everything would be so different.
“— this whole thing is good for the family; it keeps us involved, which is good. Carlos Jr. and myself never got along as well as his father and I” your father finished out as you regained your awareness of the situation.
“So I have to go live with him? and have his babies?” You question “How are babies even made?” an awkward silence sweeps over the room at the question. You look to your father while he looks away. Then to your brothers who are sharing glances with each other. You look at your mother last, shes looking right at you, pity on her face.
“Y/n, darling, that is something for the two of us to discuss at a later date” you slump into your seat, frustrated at the lack of information.
“Anyway, I will set up a dinner soon for the two of you to meet. Your mother and I, along with Reyes will also be attending” this cause some outrage from yoir brothers; they had always been protective of you and didn’t understand why they couldn’t go.
——————————————————————————
The dinner was not what you expected, neither was Carlos. He was seated at the head of the table, you had to admit he was very handsome; he was dressed in nice clothing, obviously very expensive and tailored to his body. You were seated on the opposite end. Your parents between you.
Despite the silence that plagued the dinner while you were eating, your parents decided to bring a conversation between the three of them to the study. Leaving you and Carlos alone.
“So, what are your hobbies?” You ask, trying to get to know the man that you will soon share your life with.
“I don’t have any, to busy”
“Alright, well, do you like kids?” you try
he sighs “look you don’t have to… we arent gonna…” he pauses briefly standing up “we aren’t getting married”
“What?”
“My mother set this whole thing up… I’m sorry you seem like a nice girl. But, I don’t even know you. I’m sure you don’t want to marry me.”
“Its just business”
He laughs a little “I don’t understand—“
“Thats what my dad said, its just business. We’ll get married, have kids, share responsibilities.”
“Darling, do you even understand what those responsibilities are?”
“Don’t!” You stand up quickly realizing what you did and then sit down “Please, don’t call me that.” you take a deep breath “I may not know everything but I am willing to learn my responsibilities I take that seriously”
“Do you want to marry me?”
“I…need too.”
He looks you, he seems to be contemplating something. “Alright then.”
——————————————————————————
You were sitting in your dinning room waiting for dinner when your parents arrived.
“Darling, I don’t know what you did but I am proud of you!” your father exclaimed as he was seated “He’s going to marry you”
“Really?” You were surprised “He said he didn’t—“
“Well, he changed his mind” your mother interrupted
“He really changed his mind, the wedding has been moves up!”
“Moved up? to when?”
“October, you are getting married in October!”

I think you have a bad perception of the romance genre!
Now, I see that this was initially about the manga I'm a Wolf, but My Boss is a Sheep! and I haven't been reading a lot of comics lately, so of course take everything I'm going to say with a grain of salt, but I do read a decent number of romance novels, and genre romance has lot of conventions.
So! Prose-wise, genre romance has a pretty defined structure and a pretty defined goal (the HEA or HFN) and then you're done. If you depart from it too much, you will lose your reader, and then you will get bad reviews, you will get a reputation for writing outside of the genre you claim to be a part of, and you will not get money for writing alleged romance where they die at the end or something.
(I'm just getting in a dig there at people who aren't here; from time to time on Book Twitter you will see someone roll up and say, "I am going to change the romance genre forever--my characters won't have a happily ever after!" and then the romance readers who know what to expect from genre romance--a happily ever after or happy for now--will say, "No, no, if you try that, the reviews will kill your career, if you even successfully get into the romance section at the store." The term "romance" is an important marketing tool.)
Now, anyway, this proposal that a romance story not be able to the formation of a relationship, but rather about the time in the HEA...I believe you are simply proposing, here, a different genre. All kinds of stories happen to people who are happily in relationships. A nosy amateur detective in a cozy mystery might well be married. (A nosy amateur detective in a cozy mystery might even start the twenty-book series unattached, meet a hard-boiled PI, and form a relationship that is ultimately happy--all while solving twenty mysteries.)
Now, a story that doesn't have another genre like that, however--well, that will just be...general fiction. Slice of life, perhaps? (I suspect "slice of life" is more likely a descriptor for comics than for prose.) But calling it Romance will just annoy the Romance readers. And while each person is the center of their own universe, their experiences are not universal, and the readers of genre romance are probably more numerous than readers who want to call things Romance that don't fit into current genre conventions.
Now, as for these suggestions about people's bad perceptions of relationships: I will assert that people don't actually want to read about real relationships. This is evidenced by the fact that they happily read about the wild shit that happens in romance novels. People want to fantasize about a little light dubcon with a rakish marquess in a castle or about seducing a woman who is also a car or something, but they don't want these things to happen in real life. Goodness knows I don't have any interest in marrying a man and then being unknowingly widowed as his twin brother takes his place to try and keep me from finding out so that I won't lose the baby*, but it certainly is fun to read about.
Preferring to read about the drama of people eloping to Gretna Green or being rescued in the snowy forest by a mysterious wolf woman over reading something steady and smooth like the simple day-to-day of living in the wolf woman's cave (if it's not steady and smooth, by the way, I propose that it would likely become an adventure or drama or action story; a different genre altogether) does not mean someone has a bad perception of relationships. It means they have a preference for what they read. It also probably means they've been reading genre romance , are familiar with the structure and conventions, enjoy the structure and conventions, and don't care to adopt something new, even if they don't say, "Well, the genre convention is this and I like it fine."
I am very lucky in that "responding to other Tumblr users" is not a genre with widely accepted conventions so this doesn't have a strict structure of any sort to stick to, because I feel it is disorganized. But I also feel like maybe you don't actually like genre romance. And that's fine! You just have to find the things that are for you.
*Lorraine Heath, The Earl Takes All
So I posted this elsewhere yesterday but like...
Why does almost every romance series spend all the time in the world on getting the two characters into the “actually dating” phase and then immediately zip to “married with kids and now the series is over.”
This is, currently, about “I'm a Wolf, but My Boss is a Sheep!” which was very fun and cute and I enjoyed it a lot!
But I wanna see the meat of things too dammit! Don’t skip over the actual relationship! That’s the best part!
A lot of folks mentioned it's "an easier story structure to follow the building of a relationship", that "real relationships are hard work and unromantic", that it's more fun to focus on "THE CHASE" and "THE DRAMA", and I legitimately cannot disagree more.
I should note I’m very much on the Ace/Aro side so all those replies and quotes saying “THE DRAMA/CHASE IS FUN” is so counter to how my brain works.
I legitimately hate the drama, I don’t understand the chase, I just wanna see the characters I like grow together and be happy.
The drama is boring and gross and often times just like... sets bad examples for how real relationships are.
Anyway, I'm rambling, but it's just very frustrating.

Tumblr media
you’re stunned, absolutely frozen. every word that could describe your current state—speechless, shocked, dazed—falls short.
you had heard about the newly debuted boy group, the one everyone was buzzing about. but with your packed schedule, endless practices, and back-to-back performances, you barely had time to breathe, let alone catch up on industry gossip.
but now, standing just a few feet away from you, was someone who looked like a memory brought to life.
the soft, slightly whiny voice. the chestnut-brown hair that curled slightly at the ends. the gaze—sharp yet gentle, just as you remembered. it had to be him.
and before you could stop yourself, his name slipped from your lips like it was second nature.
“sim jaeyun.”
he turned, his eyes landing on you, widening in recognition. and then, as if time hadn’t passed at all, his face broke into a grin.
“muffin?”
hearing that nickname again was like reopening an old wound. years of carefully buried emotions began to resurface, sharp and bittersweet.
“yun?” you managed, your voice wavering as your heart threatened to beat out of your chest.
he looked at you like you were something out of a dream, his eyes scanning your face as if committing every detail to memory. “it’s really you,” he said softly, his voice laced with wonder.
you smiled, the corners of your lips trembling. “it’s really me.”
“what are you doing here? don’t tell me you’re one of the performers.”
you nodded, suddenly shy under his gaze. “didn’t know you actually went through with becoming famous,” you said, trying to keep your tone light even as your emotions threatened to overwhelm you.
he chuckled, the sound so familiar it made your chest ache. “didn’t know you did, either. weren’t you the kid who once froze during the school talent show because you forgot the words to your own song?”
you rolled your eyes, the teasing instantly easing some of the tension. “yeah, well, people change.”
“you can say that again,” he murmured, his eyes softening as they lingered on you.
years ago
“yun, is it final? you’re really moving?”
your voice was quiet, shaky—almost pleading. you didn’t want to believe it. couldn’t.
he sighed, his shoulders slumping as he looked anywhere but at you. “as much as i hate it…”
you waited, holding your breath, even though you already knew the answer.
“yeah. it’s final.”
“but, yun…”
“muffin,” he said softly, using that nickname that once made you smile but now only made your chest tighten.
you hated it at that moment. it was too light, too playful, too much him.
“can’t you just… stay? with me?” your voice cracked, and you bit the inside of your cheek, determined not to cry. “i don’t have anyone else but you.”
he finally looked at you then, his expression torn, his eyes shining with something that looked too much like guilt. “you think this is easy for me? you’re my best friend. leaving you is the last thing i want to do. but i don’t have a choice. my family needs this.”
you wanted to scream, to tell him that you needed him too. but deep down, you knew he was right. and that didn’t make it hurt any less.
“promise me,” you said after a long pause, your voice barely above a whisper. “promise me we won’t lose touch.”
his hand found your shoulder, warm and grounding. “i promise. calls, texts, video chats—you name it. you’re stuck with me, muffin.”
you swallowed the lump in your throat, nodding. “you better mean it. because if you forget about me, i’ll—”
“you’ll what?” he teased, the corners of his lips twitching into a small smile.
“i’ll fly to australia and make you regret it,” you shot back, trying to match his playful tone.
he laughed, the sound a little shaky. “deal. but that won’t happen, okay? i couldn’t forget you if i tried.”
but promises, no matter how heartfelt, are fragile things. the calls became less frequent. the texts dwindled. until, eventually, there was nothing. and all you had left of him was the memory of his laugh and the nickname you couldn’t bear to hear again.
back to the present
“you’re really here,” he said, breaking the silence. “famous idol and all. i should’ve known you’d make it big.”
“funny,” you said, raising an eyebrow. “i could say the same about you. i didn’t even know you wanted this.”
he shrugged, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. “i didn’t, at first. but one day, i was watching kpop idols performing, and suddenly i thought, hey, maybe i could do that.”
“and here i thought you were going to take over the family business,” you teased, crossing your arms.
“well, surprise.” he gestured at himself dramatically. “instead of suits and ties, you get… this.”
you laughed, the sound easing the knot in your chest. “you make it sound so easy. meanwhile, i nearly quit a hundred times.”
“you?” he asked, his eyebrows shooting up. “the same girl who made me sing ‘do you wanna build a snowman’ at your birthday party? that girl almost quit?”
“okay, but that was different,” you argued, your cheeks flushing at the memory. “i had you to blame if it went horribly.”
“and yet, look at you now,” he said, his voice softening as his gaze settled on you. “center stage. killing it.”
“you’re not so bad yourself, yun,” you said quietly. “i’m proud of you.”
his expression shifted, something unspoken passing between you. “i missed you,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
your chest tightened. “me too.”
“i tried to find you,” he said, his tone a mix of frustration and regret. “but you don’t use social media, and… i don’t know. i thought maybe you didn’t want to be found.”
“it wasn’t that,” you said quickly. “life just… got in the way. and i didn’t think you’d still—”
“still what?”
“still care,” you finished softly, looking down.
he reached out, his fingers brushing against yours. “are you kidding? muffin, i never stopped caring. not for a second.”
his words hit you like a wave, and you felt tears prick at the corners of your eyes.
“i regret it,” you whispered. “losing touch with you. i should’ve tried harder.”
“hey,” he said gently, his thumb lightly brushing the back of your hand. “we both could’ve tried harder. but we’re here now, right?”
you nodded, your lips curling into a small, hesitant smile. “yeah. we are.”
“so, how about a fresh start?” he asked, his grin returning. “friends again? or do i need to buy your forgiveness first?”
“a fresh start, huh?” you said, pretending to think. “well, if we’re doing that, you at least owe me coffee for all the years you were MIA.”
he laughed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “coffee? muffin, i’ll buy you coffee every day if it means i get to make it up to you.”
“bold words, sim jaeyun.”
“what can i say?” he said, smirking. “i’m committed to the cause.”
“we’ll see about that,” you teased, but your voice softened as you added, “just don’t disappear again, okay? i don’t think i can handle losing you twice.”
he laced his fingers with yours, his grip warm and steady. “never again,” he promised.
and this time, you believed him.

I paused my FoF rewatch for My Journey to You but reading fanfics about FoF has me thinking about how tragic Wen Xiao’s ending is. When I watched it the first time, I was so focused on the tragedy of Bai Jiu, Pei Sijing being left alone, and how how happy I was that ZYC and ZYZ got a hopeful ending that I didn’t pay that much attention to Wen Xiao. But I keep coming back to how sad her ending is and maybe it doesn’t seem as sad as it actually is, at first, because nominally she got exactly what she wanted — the restored powers of the Baize Goddess. In fact…EVERYONE gets exactly what they wanted at the start:
Wen Xiao starts out seeking the Baize token and trying to make herself useful — at the end she is the fully restored Baize Goddess, very much alive and useful
ZYZ starts out wanting to die at ZYC’s hands — ends dying at ZYC’s hands
ZYC — wants to restore the Demon Hunting Bureau and kill ZYZ — ends with the Bureau restored and kills ZYZ
Pei Sijing — wants to solve the mystery of her brother death — solves it
Bai Jiu — wants to bring his mom back/find out what happened to her — brings her back
Ying Lei — wants to become a cook — becomes a cook
But as each character gets what they said they wanted, we see that their priorities have shifted and they are now focused on something else. This ranges from Bai Jiu, who is overjoyed that he succeeds in his original mission, but is now focused on saving his found family, to ZYZ, who doesn’t want to follow through on his original goal at all.
For Wen Xiao, like ZYZ and ZYC, getting what she originally wanted turns out to mean sacrificing her personal desires for the greater good. But unlike ZYZ and ZYC, who manage to duck out of their worst ending at the last minute, Wen Xiao is trapped by her fate as the Goddess without reprieve (as far as I can tell?! someone come tell me i'm wrong?!).
Not only does ZYC leave her and Wen Xiao leaves Pei Sijing, she also probably gives up her relationship with ZYZ (someone wrote a great meta about how she places her contract with ZYZ on the alter stone and this is her letting go of him and that only by releasing him in this way is he able to find his second chance with ZYC).
She ends the drama completely alone in the Wilderness, having lost everything she gained over the course of the drama except the token itself! It’s what she's been working towards the whole time and it’s only made possible by her selflessness and it’s a complete fucking tragedy!!
Wen Xiao’s selfless generosity is a dreadful and heart wrenching thing.

May I request for harumasa or lighter (zzz)? As for the alphabets, it's B, G, J, S, and X!
good afternoon, morning or night^^
-Miyi
i think i originally planned to do this one w harumasa but i feel bad locking these reqs up too long (don't even mention the non-event reqs i have, they will get done i swear) n i've not been able to play zzz much recently bc of christmas so i'm still building confidence on writing for that yellow twink (/aff)
main event page - event masterlist
Tumblr media
B: Body - what's their favourite body part of yours? Lighter really loves your hands. Absolutely one to compare hand sizes - especially if yours are a lot smaller than his, but it's really just an excuse to feel your soft hands against his calloused ones and get a good look at them. In fact, he loves any excuse to stare at them, like if you paint your nails or wear rings a lot - if you text him that you got a drink or something, he'll ask to see because he knows the photo will include your hand holding it. He also loves holding hands, he has so many sappy thoughts about your fingers interlock with his like puzzle pieces. Likes if you trace his scars or draw little patterns onto his skin with your finger, just finds the dance of your fingertips against his skin really soothing and intimate.
G: Gifts - do they give a lot of gifts? how do they feel about receiving gifts from you? Every time he runs errands in the city, Lighter will pick you up random things he think you'd like, whether it's your favourite snacks or a silly-looking plushie. While he won't necessarily get you a bunch of thought-out gifts without occasion, there are always little treats and trinkets waiting for you - you're just in the back of his mind basically non-stop, and he drops them into his basket without thinking twice. Sometimes, if he ends up getting you a bunch of things at once, he'll give them to you over a few days, just so he can see the smile on your face when he gives them to you again. With recieving gifts from you, he's a bit awkward about it but he treasures everything you give him. Especially if it's something heartfelt or expensive, he doesn't really know what to say to thank you but he appreciates it immensely. And if you return his treatment of regular small gifts, he keeps them all in one place, a small box in his drawer that to most people would just look like a bunch of random items, but is essentially a shrine to you.
J: Jealousy - do they get jealous easily? what are they like when they're jealous? Already done, see it here xx
S: Show-off - do they like to show off to their s/o? Honestly, he's more of a show off before you're dating, when he's crushing. Will never admit it but he has a desperate need for you to think he's cool. Tries to be extra suave and intimidating (to others, not to you), and gets extra flashy in fights when he knows you're watching. Once you're dating, though, his showing off basically becomes a way to tease you. You like his arms? The jacket's off and he's randomly flexing his muscles to watch you stare. Find his voice hot? He's playing it up and talking into your ear so you hang off his every word. Anything you find attractive, whether you tell him or he notices himself, he's showing it off - partially because it adds a bit of pride in that trait, but mainly because he loves to see your reactions to it.
X: X-Ray - how easily can they read their partner? how easy are they to read? Already done, see it here xx

I still don’t know what love is.
But I want to someday fall in love and understand what it is.
A passionate love like a rose set ablaze, and a fierce love that stays on for eternity like a woven tale.
???: I see, I see…
???: How utterly laughable.
(... Who is that?)
The usual dream I had every night changed the night before I set out on my trip to a foreign country.
It was set in a rose garden where the roses were still tightly closed buds. The space felt undeveloped and incomplete.
There stood an unfamiliar visitor, reading an unfinished tale from a book placed on an oak table.
His appearance was otherworldly, unlike that of any ordinary person.
His hair shimmered under the light of the massive moon hanging from the sky, and his eyes seemed to contain a starry sky within.
That divine, beautiful being who seemed to blend well with the dream’s space gave me a mocking grin as I approached.
Emma: What’s… laughable?
???: I have some unfortunate news for you, who yearns for love and thirsts for knowledge of what it is.
???: Love is not the grand blessing it is often proclaimed to be.
???: Sometimes, it would serve you well to remain ignorant and pure for your entire life. You would find far greater happiness that way.
I didn't know what he read from that unfinished tale.
But this “something”, who clearly wasn't human, directly and utterly rejected what laid at the very core of my heart.
Emma: And how can you be so sure of that?
???: Because I am a god.
(... God?)
???: I have witnessed many examples of “love”. Not in fiction… but rather the raw, unvarnished love that exists in.
???: Far too often, people use “love” as a means to justify their otherwise unjustifiable actions.
???: It is truly tragic to see people driven mad by love.
???: Even the most rational people become unable to live without it.
???: Like a curse.
Emma: …
???: Judging from this dreamscape shrouded in thorns, you must be a lady from Rhodolite.
Tumblr media
???: Rhodolite had such a tale too, did it not? About a king who turned into a beast after losing his beloved.
Emma: … While the story of the late Belle and the king may have been a tragedy, that doesn't mean all love must end the same way.
???: Fair enough. However, not all love will end as a comedy either.
???: Why do you yearn for love?
Words caught in my throat upon hearing the god’s question.
There was no special reason for my yearning.
It was nothing more than mere admiration, I had never deeply thought about what love truly meant.
For the first time, I realised that my yearning was but an empty shell.
???: At the very least, love is something I would very much rather do without.
???: — For I am a god incapable of loving people.
(……ん……)
(... Mm…)
Awaken by gentle sunlight streaming through the window, I opened my eyes to see the familiar ceiling of my room in town.
The unbloomed roses and the god who denied love both vanished as though they were nothing more than an illusion.
As I woke up, memories of the dream began crumbling away and were gradually replaced by reality.
But a fragment of that dream lingered in my heart, refusing to disappear.
(“Love is a curse”... huh.)
???: Emma, you up?
A knock on my door banished the remaining drowsiness from my mind.
(This voice… Rio?)
Emma: Sorry, just a minute!
???: Ah, no worries. I’m a gentleman, I’ll wait for as long as you need.
(... I think I just heard a voice that wasn't Rio’s…)
Feeling slightly uneasy, I hurriedly got dressed, washed my face, and tidied myself up before opening the door.
Standing at my front door was my friend, who left his position as a butler to return to town with me, greeting me with his ever so radiant smile.
Rio: Good morning! You’re absolutely adorable today, as always!
Emma: Yeah, yeah, thanks as usual.
Emma: … What brings you here this early in the morning?
Rio: I came to visit because I just had to see your face.
Rio: And I bought bread. Want to enjoy it together?
Emma: Thanks, I’d love to. Mmm, smells good…
Rio: It’s from your favourite bakery. They launched a new “fortune bread” today.
Emma: Fortune bread? That’s interesting!
Clavis: Wait, wait, Emma. We have some more important matters to focus on than bread right now, don't we?
A man forced himself between us and snatched the bag of bread.
(So I wasn't imagining things when I thought I heard another voice.)
I stopped avoiding reality as a means of self-defence and turned to face the country’s most notorious troublemaker— a certain prince with a shady smile.
Emma: It’s been a while, Clavis.
Clavis: You could've jumped straight into my arms right off the bat, you know?
Emma: Thank you for kind consideration. Why are you here?
Clavis: Hmm, what do you think?
???: Enough with the theatrics and just tell her already.
(Huh…?)
My eyes widened when I saw a tall figure sitting on a wooden crate some distance away.
Emma: Luke’s here too!?
Luke: Oops. My bad, I invited myself into the conversation too early.
Rio: I coincidentally ran into Clavis and Luke earlier on.
Rio: Though, they didn't tell me what they’re here for…
(I was just thinking it was rare for Rio to come visit me so early in the morning… maybe he’s worried about me.)
Luke stood up from the wooden crate and raised the paper bag he had in his hand.
Luke: Mind if we join you for breakfast?
My modest home where I, a commoner, lived was now filled with two princes and my former butler friend…
Our surroundings were both physically and emotionally stuffy.
Clavis: Emma, you’re heading to Tanzanite soon, right?
Rio: Ugh…
The freshly baked bread, along with the sweets Luke brought, bounced slightly when Rio hit his head against a corner of the table.
Clavis: What's the matter?
Rio: … I lose control of myself whenever I hear about that.
Rio: The thought of not being able to see my angel, my goddess, my beautiful fairy Emma…
Luke: You’re such a drama queen.
(When I first told Rio about my trip, he was completely broken. I guess this counts as an improvement.)
[ Flashback ]
Rio: — Emma’s going to Tanzanite…
Emma: Rio, are you okay!? You hit your head on the bookshelf really hard…
Rio: I’m okay… but… why…
Emma: I’ve heard many stories about foreign countries from the Owner, but I’m most interested in the god who can perform infallible divinations.
Emma: If such a god really exists, I’d like to meet them even just once.
Emma: Besides, Tanzanite’s a popular tourist destination.
Emma: It’s a country in the dessert, but I think it's a good choice of destination for my first trip.
[ Flashback End ]
(I feel bad for nearly causing Rio to pass out, but…)
(I’ve been really excited every day ever since deciding to travel to Tanzanite.)
Luke: I’m surprised you’re not going with her.
Rio: The Owner told me to look after the bookstore while she’s away.
Rio: I really do want to go with her!! What if something happens to her when I’m not there…!?
Rio: But if staying behind will help Emma feel more at ease on her trip, then I… I’ll…
Clavis: Haha, you can be rest assured about that.
Clavis tore off a piece of the bread in his hand and ate it, savouring it in delight before swallowing.
Clavis: Because we’ll be her bodyguards in your place.
Rio: Oh, is that true? Thank goodness, I feel relieved—
Rio: — Wait, that won’t do—! What is that supposed to mean!?
(Seriously, what does he mean by that!?)
I almost dropped my fortune bread but managed to catch it in a panic.
Clavis: I mean exactly what I said.
Luke: We’re going to Tanzanite too.
Luke stuffed a whole honey-coated pastry in his mouth and licked his fingers.
Luke: I didn't wanna go at first because it’s too bothersome, but Chevalier ordered me to take care of some diplomatic matters.
(Going to Tanzanite during this period of time means…)
[ Flashback ]
Akatsuki: Politics have been unstable lately.
Emma: Is it because of… the Three-Nation  Alliance?
Akatsuki: Yeah. None of the countries have made any moves at the moment, but this feels like the calm before a storm.
[ Flashback End ]
(... I’m an outsider now, so it’s best for me to refrain from getting involved.)
Clavis: Since we’re all leaving for Tanzanite at around the same time, why don't you come with us?
Clavis: We plan to take the route that passes through Benitoite. If you ride on the royal ship, your transportation is basically free.
Clavis: I can already picture you crying tears of joy. Ah, you don't even have to say it, I already know.
Clavis: You’re so lucky to have the privilege of travelling to a foreign country with your beloved Clavis—
Rio: OBJECTION!
Rio shot up from his seat with a start in the cramped room and pointed a finger at Clavis.
Rio: People always say that there's nothing scarier than something that comes free. What's your real motive? Out with it.
(As expected of Rio. That’s what I want to know too.)
Clavis took a deliberate sip of the tea I brewed and paused as though to savour it…
His wet lips then curled into a meaningful and bold smile.
Clavis: What do you think?
Luke: Don't say such things that mess with people. There's no deeper meaning at all.
Clavis: Read the room, Luke.
Luke: You read the room.
Luke: This guy ordered every official to report anything interesting about Emma to him.
Emma: So you were made aware of my trip to Tanzanite because…
Luke: The official who issued your travel permit ratted you out.
Emma: Is that not abuse of power!?
Clavis: What are you talking about? It’s for work.
Luke: This guy found out about your first ever trip and got all “amused” by it.
Luke: He even volunteered to personally make a trip to Tanzanite, and I got stuck with the job of babysitting him thanks to Nokto.
Luke: He said “I feel bad for Emma, so I’ll send at least one sensible person to go along”.
(Thanks, Nokto!)
Luke: But if you’d rather not deal with his crap, I’ll take personal responsibility to bury Clavis in the woods for you.
Clavis: No need to worry about that. Emma is shaking with excitement, isn't she?
Luke: … You should get your eyes checked out before we leave the country.
Rio … I’m worried. I’m very worried.
(Since I’m not travelling alone, I should probably discuss this with the Owner…)
(But with both Clavis and Luke accompanying me, having familiar faces in an unfamiliar land does make me feel more assured.)
After mulling it over, I furrowed my brows and tore the fortune bread in half.
Emma: Oh?
(Something fell out from inside.)
It was a small porcelain figurine that resembled a horse with a horn, standing proudly in my palm.
Rio: As expected of Emma! You hit the jackpot.
Clavis: Hm… the unicorn is indeed currently considered the continent-wide ultimate symbol of “good luck”.
Emma: Is that so?
Clavis: Yeah. You should keep it as a good luck charm. What a great start to your journey.
Clavis: After all, unicorns hold a special symbolism in a country in the desert.
(I don't exactly associate unicorns with deserts, though…)
Emma: If that’s the case, it does seem like it’ll bring me blessings.
Luke: You’re always a good person, anyway. Even without a unicorn, I bet lots of positive things will happen to you.
I gently cupped the unicorn figurine in my hand.
The unexpected stroke of luck felt encouraging, like it was telling me that my current most honest feelings were right.
Clavis: So, Emma, you’re travelling together with us, right…?
The gateway to Tanzanite, the country of deserts, divinations and illusions was a bustling port thriving with merchants, much like Benitoite.
Emma: We’re in Tanzanite!
(Although… I expected more sandstorms because I was told that it’s in a desert.)
The lively streets looked nothing like a desert.
However, the animals roaming the streets and the people’s clothing were clearly distinct from those in Rhodolite or Benitoite.
Along with the scent of spices wafting through the air, it was undeniable that we were now on foreign land.
(We’ve really come a long way.)
Akatsuki: Our destination is still far from here. It’s too early to get excited.
The Owner, carrying loads of goods for trading, came to stand next to me.
I was carrying a bag filled with books myself, but it was nothing compared to his load.
Emma: Should I help carry some of that?
Akatsuki: No need. I usually carry it all by myself.
(That's easily 100 books over there… I can't believe he carries them alone.)
Clavis: We offered to help too, but Akatsuki sure is hardworking.
Luke: I told Emma I’d help carry her stuff too.
Clavis and Luke whom we travelled on the same ship with packed lightly as compared to us.
Emma: Thanks. But since this is my first time sourcing for goods, I want to carry my own baggage.
Emma: Selling books in a foreign country and purchasing new ones…
Emma: I’m so excited to see how greatly my bag’s contents will change on the way back to Rhodolite.
Luke: Someone’s being really energetic.
Clavis: Akatsuki is lucky to have such a good assistant too.
Clavis: By the way, where are you two headed to after this?
Akatsuki: We’re meeting someone.
Emma: … We are?
I followed the Owner’s gaze that shifted unnaturally and saw a strikingly beautiful woman standing there.
(Wow…)
She wore vibrant ruby red clothing and was adorned in glamorous accessories that rivaled the Owner’s outfit.
Standing next to her was a bespectacled man with a gentle appearance. He smiled when he noticed us and approached.
Bespectacled Man: We’ve been expecting you, Akatsuki. And this is…?
Emma: I’m Emma, I came as the Owner’s assistant.
Basil: Ah, I read about you in the letter. A pleasure to meet you, please call me Basil.
Basil: And this lady over here is Kamal.
Kamal: …
Kamal smiled seductively and pulled out a stack of papers from which she showed me a piece with the words “it’s nice to meet you” written on it.
Basil: As you can see, Kamal can’t speak. Please communicate with her through writing.
(I see…)
Emma: Understood. I look forward to working with you both.
Clavis: … Hm.
As we exchanged pleasantries, Clavis stood nearby rubbing his chin.
Clavis: You must be emissaries of the living god, correct?
(... Huh?)
Basil: Well done! You noticed right away.
Clavis: The symbols of faith you wear make it easy to figure out.
Clavis pointed at his own chest.
Basil and Kamal gestured to their chests too, where the clasps of their cloaks were fastened.
(... Now that I took a proper look at them, the clasps have unicorns on them.)
(Are those the “symbols of faith”?)
Clavis: I was told in the past that the unicorn ornaments are worn by those who are close to god.
Clavis: And a few years ago, I recall hearing about a book merchant Azel especially favoured.
Clavis: I had my suspicions, but it seems that Akatsuki has some rather prominent clients.
Emma: Is god… one of your clients?
Akatsuki: Regardless of whether they’re god or royalty, a client is a client. Nothing more, nothing less.
(He never mentioned this to me!)
The Owner whose facial expression remained unchanged suddenly appeared far more impressive than I had initially thought of him to be.
Basil: We have always been the ones to guide Akatsuki during his visits to Tanzanite.
Basil: Prince Clavis, Prince Luke, please proceed in that direction. Emissaries from the Royal Court are waiting for you.
Clavis: Haha, not only for me but for Luke the newcomer too? How insightful indeed.
Clavis: Rhodolite didn’t send any prior notice about who would be coming. Is this another prophecy from the living god?
(...!)
Basil: That’s correct. Lord Azel is truly impressive. Is this a good time to talk about it? It is, right?
(He suddenly started speaking really fast…)
Kamal mercilessly smacked Basil on the head as he adjusted his glasses.
She then took out her stack of papers again and showed us the one that said “let’s go”.
(... That sounded like she hit hard enough to crack his skull. Is he okay?)
Luke: Then I guess this is where we go our own ways.
Clavis: I’ll personally come to meet you again, Emma. Before you start crying from loneliness.
Emma: I don't think I will, but until next time.
(So… we’re going straight to meet the god now, right?)
(I’m starting to get nervous.)
(I wonder what kind of person a living god is like.)
Azel: Thank you for taking the trouble to come all the way out to such a remote location.
Emma: Oh!

26. 12. Asmodeus - Wrapped like a gift (18+)
Tumblr media
     ༺☆༻
⟡ Masterlist ⟡
⋆꙳·❅‧The Yule festival of Hell 2‧❆ ₊⋆
A/N: The ending eludes to Y/N without a dick, but can be read even if you have one (just squint your eyes at one point)
‎‧₊˚✧ 18+ Minors Do Not Interact‎ ✧˚₊‧
     ༺☆༻
The more you walk through the Abaddon castle towards Asmodeus' rooms, the more your intuition tells you that you shouldn't. There's something really unnerving about the message he's sent you:
'Y/N! Come get your Christmas gift! You'll find it on my bed ;)'
The winking emoji already had you slightly suspicious and then when all your texts inquiring about more info of the gift's nature went unanswered, the feeling of you being set up to meet your doom really set in.
By the time you reach the master bedroom door, your heart is anxiously trying to beat its way out through your ribcage.
As you're about to knock on the heavy door, a note attached to the handle by a ribbon catches your attention. The writing is in the most beautiful cursive – presumably Asmo's handwriting.
'No need to knock, just enter. I'm waiting ;)'
That emoji again. You really should turn around and call one of the other kings to come and get you out of here, but instead you take a deep breath and reach out for the handle, like the note instructed.
Slowly opening the tall door, you first see a dimly lit room full of lit candles. Stepping into the room, you see more and more of them until finally, your eyes land on the centerpiece of the whole fire hazard.
The master bed is adorned by many satin-covered pillows, which look like they're glowing in the candle flame light. And there, amidst all the glowing fabric and scattered red rose petals is Asmodeus.
He's naked, kneeling and fully restrained with his hands securely bound behind his back by ribbons. A whimper of proud obedience leaves his gagged mouth as your eyes scan his form from the top of his pitch black hair all the way down to the bow tied around the base of his very hard dick with the words 'Free use' above it in a similar fashion to Beelzebub's tattoos.
“A-asmo...?!” you exclaim in a surprise and the demon cockily smiles around the ball in his mouth while thrusting a few times into the air as if to entice you to take the opportunity to do anything with him.
You're not gonna lie, this display ignites something dangerous inside you and you yourself don't really know what might happen in the next few hours.
Only after taking a few steps towards the bed while shedding all the extra layers you're not going to need for the rest of your time here, you notice all the laid out pleasure and/or pain toys.
“Nnnghh...~!” Asmodeus impatiently whimpers with his eyes slightly rolling back, as if just your presence was enough to get him off.
You take a deep breath, partially to calm your nerves but to also stop so many ideas popping up at once.
Standing a the foot of the bed, you contemplate your first course of action with some soft humming. One part of you wants to tease him until he's unable to take it anymore and the other wants to overstimulate him.
Another impatient groan with more pathetic air thrusts interrupts your decision-making and without even thinking, you pick up the leather whip and land a few hits on one of the demon's inner thighs, “Shush... I'm still deciding.”
“Haa~!” the sudden pain makes Asmodeus moan out as his dick twitches a few times, clearly becoming desperate for any sort of stimulation. It doesn't escape you that so little was already enough for him to start producing precum, which was now lazily running down his entire length and dripping underneath him onto the satin sheet.
“I wonder... What would happen if I just left you like this... All needy for me, expecting me to pounce on you, but I don't...” you question, more as a thinking out loud since he can't really answer you much.
'Then you'd make the biggest mistake, I'll take great joy in reminding you of all the time.' a threat in a playful tone enters your mind, sounding as if Asmodeus whispered it right into your ear. Judging by the cocky smirk that's molded around the plastic ball in his mouth, it was the demon talking to you in your head. Does that also mean he can read your thoughts, then?
“Hm...” you look back down at the array of toys at your disposal. A feather duster, candle with ligther, leather whip, chain attachment for the choker he's wearing, paddle, dagger and...
Finally, your eyes land on the strap on with an attachment resembling Asmo's very own throbbing length next to a strip of black satin – presumably intended to be a blindfold. A low chuckle vibrates in your throat as a very fun way to enjoy your gift comes into your mind.
With a swift movement you snatch the cold fabric and walk around the bed to kneel behind the nicely presented demon. A shaky breath leaves his gagged lips as you tie the blindfold around his eyes, but to his disappointment, after that you're immediately getting off the bed again and walking off.
He can't see it anymore, but you're actually putting on the harness and attaching the rather disproportionate dick onto your body. On the way back to your original position the chain lead catches your eye and you take it with you.
Asmo hates to admit it to himself, but being someone else's bitch excites him as long as it's you. Still, not being able to see makes him feel on a very thrilling edge. His hearing is good, but the way you're too quiet while moving around his room is a bit unnerving to him.
The demon's head whips to the side when you get back onto the bed. With a gentle hand you guide his chin up so you can attach the chain's clasp.
By pulling on the chain, you pull Asmodeus backwards until his head is on your shoulder as you whisper right into his ear, while rubbing your borrowed dick against his ass, “Tell me, bitchboy... Has anybody else ever given you a good prostate orgasm?”
     ༺☆༻
But wait, this demon also has a gift for you!
"Ahahah, my pretty little bitch... There's yet so much for you to experience and I am more than happy to guide you through all these new things, huhu..."

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The smell of candles made the room smell incredibly good, but nothing was useful to calm your own destructive thoughts. You were very close to a final exam and the anxiety made you feel like the worst. You could hardly sleep well and rest as you deserved.
You had cancelled your dates with your boyfriend and your meetings with your friends. Your final was important and you were too focused on it. Who cared if you were nice, if you failed your finals?
You didn’t totally believe in fate or good vibes. Yes, you could trust that fate would be on your side and manifesting a passing grade might be important, but it was also important to study until your eyes were tired and you fell asleep with pure tiredness. As extreme as it sounds.
Your phone started ringing and that made you lose focus from the screen. You read the name on your cell phone, it was your boyfriend, Ollie. Knowing it was perhaps important, you answered the call before it rang a second time.
“Ollie? Something happened?”
“Hi, baby. I just missed hearing your voice.”
You smiled. Lately you were being a little mean with him, canceling your plans and dates with him. His voice brought a moment of peace when you needed it most. Ollie gave you peace.
“I also missed hearing your voice but I’m studying, I have a final.”
“Stress about Uni won’t do you any good, baby.”
You knew it, you also knew your boyfriend wanted the best for you.
“Ollie, I have to keep studying. Can we talk later?”
“When will I see you again? I miss you badly.”
“I don’t know. I miss you too."
“Okay. Call me if you need anything.”
When the call ended, you continued studying. Time passed, that same night you fell asleep on your desk and woke up with an incredible neck pain. Sometimes it was most useful for you to study at night, so it was barely seven pm when you locked yourself back in your room to study. Your roomie was in her room getting ready to party.
You heard the bell ring. You assumed it was a visit for your roommate. A couple of seconds later, you heard footsteps and a noise in the door. You got up and came to see who it was.
Right there was Ollie, with a teddy bear in his arms.
“Ollie, what are you doing here?”
“Oh, Ollie, I'm so happy to see you.” He joked, a little sarcastically.
“I love seeing you, really. I just didn’t know you were coming. Come on in.”
He came into your room and you realized it was a mess. The only thing that was tidy was your bed, since you had not spent the night sleeping peacefully on the mattress. Your desk was a combination of Red Bulls, empty coffee cups and snacks that was useful to you to keep you awake. The rest were books, notes and sheets of paper with the content you had to study for the exam.
“You need to take this easy.”
“I know, but you know me and you know I become a little too obsessive when I'm studying.”
He grabbed your hand and led you to bed, where he sat you on his lap.
“Listen to me, baby.”
“I listen, Ollie.”
“I know you’re a good student and you will get a good grade, but you have to remember that it’s just an exam. You are much more than a number on a piece of paper, you are more than what your professor thinks you are worth. I know how hard you work for your goals and how brave you are. So, please, at least for a few hours forget about your final and stay with me.”
“Ollie…”
“I brought you a bear.”
He offered the teddy bear to you. You grabbed it, it was brown and adorable. It wasn't the first bear your boyfriend gave you, nor would it be the last. Ollie loved to give you bears of all colors available and types, in your room you had a lot of them.
“Thank you, it's so cute. Cute like you.”
Ollie smiled and you grabbed the bear, it smelled like your boyfriend.
“Can we just lie down in your bed and cuddle?”
His brown eyes looked at you. You couldn’t say no, not when your body was so tired and you had missed him so much during those days when you barely talked.
“You don't need to ask, yes.”
And you did, you laid on bed and he hugged you from behind. You also hugged the teddy bear.
“Tell me what’s bothering you.” He muttered in your ear.
“I guess I’m just scared to forget some important information and go blank.”
“That’s not gonna happen.”
“What if it happens?”
“I don’t think your professor is a ruthless being who feeds on the blood of the innocent.”
You laughed.
“You should see how he gets when someone says a wrong answer, sometimes he scares me. I swear he gets more and more bold every class, all because of his poor nerves.”
“You will pass your final, silly.”
You turned, getting face to face with your boyfriend. You saw him so close and you came closer up to his mouth and left a sweet kiss on his lips. Ollie smiled in the middle of the kiss.
“We could watch an episode of Glee. I know you're watching it.”
“Uhmm, interesting proposal. I accept.”
With a smile on your face, you took your laptop and searched until you chose the episode you wanted. You put the computer in a comfortable place, where you and Ollie could see it quietly.
“Baby?”
“Yes?”
“I love you and I don’t want you to think for a second that you’re alone in this. I’ll be here whenever you need me. If you need someone to talk with, someone to watch tv shows or even someone to cuddle after studying. I'm here, always.”
You couldn’t stop yourself and kissed his lips. Ollie put a hand on your cheek.
“I love you so much.”
The episode of the show continued, you were so excited to be with your boyfriend that you forgot for a second the pressure of the exam. With Ollie by your side, caressing your hair and leaving kisses on your forehead was enough to be at peace.
“Go bathe and I’ll bring you food.” he suggested, once the episode was over.
“Are you saying I smell?”
Ollie just laughed.
“I’m not implying anything.”
“Fine, I’m gonna go take a bath.”
You went to your bathroom, while your boyfriend left the bedroom to cook something fast. The shower served to relax you, the pressure that you had on your shoulders felt much lighter. You put on your favorite pajamas and left the bathroom, where you found Ollie in the kitchen finishing up his food.
“Your roomie has already left, she said please don’t forget to water the plants.”
“Okay, alright.”
He brought the food onto the table, “I made pasta.”
“Smells incredible.”
Both ate in silence, something you liked about your boyfriend was that he respected the moments when you didn’t want to talk too much. Now that you were in a period full of exams, your mind was too busy to want to talk a lot. With the right words, you and Ollie dined in peace.
When you finished eating, Ollie stood up and put everything in place. Your eyes suddenly closed with exhaustion.
“Let’s go to sleep.”
You walked to your bedroom and you went to bed, repeating the same sequence of before. Ollie hugged you from behind and you hugged the teddy bear he gave you.
“Get some rest, you deserve it.”
“I feel like my mind is going to keep solving exercises while sleeping.”
“We can study tomorrow morning, I’ll help you.”
Knowing him, you knew he would keep his promise.
“I’m glad you’re here, Ollie. I was so stressed— I love you.”
“And I love you, baby. You're not alone in anything.”
